Offering an extra pair of hands to help serve the special meal to residents, Jennifer Estall, the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar's director of community services, said there was no need to convince her of how desperate the need for a stove was after she visited the shelter for herself. "I was floored they were able to put out the quantity and quality of food and the Tomato Ladies were able to cook such fantastic meals with such limited resources," she said. Esher Clark, the shift supervisor at the Lighthouse, and Rhonda Dunphy, the program coordinator, said they're grateful that the community came to their aid. "When you talk about networking, this is what it's all about," said Clark. The shelter has 38 beds at its Redwood Square location and also has apartments and hotel suites for up to 20 families throughout Halton. It provides emergency shelter, basic needs and intensive case management for men, women and families who are homeless. Clark said they get referrals and drop-ins and staff do their best to help people get back on their feet. Working with partnering organizations such as Halton Region and the Canadian Mental Health Association, they attempt to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs through a holistic approach to case management. Clark said the shelter really values the Tomato Ladies' volunteerism. "I can't say enough about their support. They truly love doing what they do and they do so in such a practical, loving way. "That's the kind of experience you really want at a place like this, and that's what we really need here."
