Local skaters to compete in Edmonton Webb unable to tame Mustangs in Jr. final Oakville will be well represented at the upcoming Skate Canada Challenge in Edmonton. Five skaters who train with Skate Oakville have qualified for the Dec. 2-5 event, as have three Oakville residents who are members of Milton Skating Club. The Skate Canada Challenge is the only opportunity for novice, junior and senior skaters to qualify for the Canadian Tire National Skating Championships. Representing Skate Oakville will be the novice dance team of Kaitlyn Chubb and Alexander Moses, junior women's competitor Emma Dinda and pre-novice women's skater Jaime Gabbard. Chubb and Moses earned bronze at the recent Central Ontario sectional championships at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Dinda won her event at Nova Scotia sectionals, and Gabbard qualified with a bronze-medal performance in the Newfoundland/Labrador championships. Alaine Chartrand, a Prescott, Ont., native who trains in Oakville, will also compete at the Skate Canada Challenge in senior women's events. Skate Oakville's Eugene Zhang won a bronze (juvenile under-12 men's freeskate) at Central Ontario sectionals. He will not advance to Edmonton, however, since the juvenile division is not contested at the national level. Skate Oakville's pre-novice dance team of Emily Vandenberg and Michael Kos placed fifth at Central Ontario sectionals and were named as alternates for the Challenge. Walker, a silver medallist in pre-novice at last year's Challenge, finished fourth in novice competition at sectionals. Schizas and Leinweber placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in prenovice. "Central Ontario is arguably the most difficult section in the country in which to qualify, and ladies singles is arguably the most difficult category," said Milton Skating Club coach Nancy Lemaire. "These girls have worked extremely hard to be where they are." QB Rourke wins Alabama state championship Former Holy Trinity Titans quarterback Nathan Rourke led the Edgewood Academy Wildcats to their sixth straight Alabama state football championship Friday. Rourke completed 19 of 27 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns, adding 53 yards and a TD on the ground, as Edgewood defeated Marengo Academy 40-34 in the Alabama Independent Schools Association final. Rourke moved to Alabama in April hoping to get more exposure to U.S. college scouts, and his season (75-per-cent completions, 59 passing touchdowns and three interceptions, despite playing in the second half just twice) has drawn their attention. UCLA, New Mexico State, Missouri, Kent State and Yale have all shown interest in the 6-foot-2 Grade 12 student. On Now at The Brick! For more details go instore or online @thebrick.com.
