The statistics aren't much different locally either, with a 2012 Halton Youth Survey showing 20 per cent of Grade 7 and Grade 10 students were overweight or obese, similar to the provincial rate of 21 per cent for youths aged 12-17 years. A 2015 Halton Kindergarten Parent Survey revealed 34 per cent of Senior Kindergarten students were also an unhealthy weight based on parent-reported height and weight, the report stated. "It seems to me, parents have an idea they're keeping their kids safe, by dropping them off at school, from these strange risks they perceive are out there, without having adequate fear that their kids are going to be obese and have diabetes or some other health issue," said Halton Hills Councillor Jane Fogal. The councillor weighed in during discussions about childhood obesity and the related report at Regional council's health and social services committee meeting Nov. 3. Fogal noted obesity is an important issue the community needs to face sooner, rather than later. Habits need to be changed to tackle it, Fogal said. Obesity places children's physical and emotional health at risk. "Unhealthy weight not only impacts children's current ability to grow and thrive, it can significantly impact the rates of preventable chronic health issues as they move into their adult years and beyond," the report stated. It was also revealed children and youths living in higher-income neighbourhoods have lower rates of overweight or obesity than those living in lower-income neighbourhoods. "While lifestyle choices have an influence on weight, the social determinants of health also have a considerable influence on the body weights of children and youths."
