Six Nations residents block rail line

OHSWEKEN - Six Nations residents today are blocking a CN railway line and Highway 54, and they say Highway 6 will be hit this afternoon unless Prime Minister Brian Mulroney starts negotiating with Quebec Mohawks.

At about 2 a.m. the sound of native drums was drowned out by the engine of a road grader as it was driven over CN lines at Pauline Johnson Road, north of Highway 54, on the northern tip of the reserve.

"This track carries a lot of chemicals and freight," warned Chief Coun. William Montour on Tuesday evening. The railway line takes trains southeast of Brantford to Dunnville and then east to the U.S. border.

"At 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon (today) we'll move on to Highway 6" near Hagersvile, said the chief councillor. It is a busy trucking route.
