Georgetown Globe Productions has secured the rights to Urinetown and rehearsals are under way, making it the first community theatre group in Ontario to mount the popular, contemporary show. To be performed at the John Elliott Theatre, the show runs November 23, 24, 25, 30 and December 1 and 2, with a matinee on November 26. Tickets are available at the box office by calling 905-877-3700. Originally presented in Canada by Canstage in 2004, Urinetown is a truly original musical. A tale of good versus evil, the show pokes fun both at itself, and at other musical classics-- West Side Story, Les Miserables and Fiddler on the Roof to name a few. The show is set in the future where a drought of epic proportions has allowed a greedy corporation, and corrupt city officials, to control the water. The use of private toilets is outlawed and the citizens must use public, pay-for-use toilets owned and operated by the iron-fisted UGC Corporation. Written by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, the show first premiered at the Fringe Festival in New York in 1999 and moved to offBroadway in the early part of 2001. The reviews and the audience were so enthusiastic that it moved to Broadway in September 2001 where it ran for over 950 performances. While on Broadway, the show was nominated for 10 Tony awards. Globe's wealth of talent ensures a night of fun, laughter and music. Georgetown Globe Productions' Urinetown is directed by Scott Carmichael, choreographed by Laura Caswell and music directed by Darryn deSouza. Adult tickets are $22, seniors/children $20, groups of 10 or more $20. Tickets can be purchased by calling the John Elliott Theatre Box Office at 905-877-3700.
