CtK students to be joined by construction workers when school resumes

When Christ the King students return to school next week, they will be joined by construction workers. The Georgetown Catholic high school will be expanded by 12 classrooms this year and construction is slated to begin at the end of summer. School starts for all 28,000 Catholic students in Halton on Tuesday, September 5. All bus information, including bus stop times, stop location and route numbers will be posted at the main entrance of each school by Tuesday, August 29. HCDSB anticipates an overall growth in enrolment of approximately 875 students. The projected enrolment figures indicate that 28,505 students (19,265 elementary and 9,240 secondary) will be returning to the 37 elementary and seven secondary schools on opening day, compared to 27,630 last year. The board employs 3,141 staff, with the total number of new teachers hired to date for this school year now at 43 (24 elementary and 19 secondary). The last day of instruction for elementary students will be Friday, June 29, 2007 and for secondary students, the last day of instruction will be Thursday, June 28, 2007. Examinations for secondary school students have been scheduled for January 2531, 2007 and June 21-27, 2007. The total number of instructional days is 190, plus six professional development days. The statutory holidays and school break periods for 2006-2007 include: · Oct. 9, Thanksgiving Day · Dec. 23-January 7 (Christmas Break) · March 9-16, March Break · April 6, Good Friday · April 9, Easter Monday · May 21, Victoria Day "The Halton Catholic District School Board continues to recognize the importance of student learning in the early years," said Director of Education Lou Piovesan. "The Primary Class Size Reduction initiative, now in the third year of a four-year implementation plan, will effectively continue to reduce class sizes in the JK to Grade 3 classes in order to achieve the government's 20:1 class size for the 20072008 school year."
