NIPIGON, ONTARIO, Thursday, October 20, 1949 PLAN DRAMA FESTIVAL Voted Highly successful by both students and instructors was the "Drama Workshop,” sponsored here by the community program branch, department of education, on Saturday and Sunday. Sessions were held in the school Saturday afternoon and evening, and Sunday afternoon. Christie Dunbar, of the Guild Players, Fort William, was lecturer, and provided assistance that will prove invaluable to amateurs and to drama groups just getting under way. Candidates for the course were registered from Geraldton, and among them were G. Goldie and Mrs J. N. Reid, representatives of the Music and Drama Festival, who are in the early stages of planning a separate dramatic club. Members of the Schreiber Dramatic Club, “The Valley Players,” were present, and on Saturday evening, with the assistance of Gordon Goldie of Geraldton, presented excerpts from their current production, “A Connecticut Yankee.” Representatives were also present from Marathon, Red Rock and Nipigon. In the Saturday afternoon session, Mr. Dunbar lectured to the group on the organization of a dramatic group, and the choosing and casting of a play. The evening session was devoted to instruction in directing a play, and acting technique. The Sunday, afternoon session was given over to the study of the art of make-up, the building of stage settings and further instruction in acting technique. During the afternoon three pantomimes were presented by the different groups, with a minimum of preparation and rehearsal. Ingenuity of the players was shown in the variety of material used to obtain the desired effects. Bridal bouquets were fashioned from torn newspaper, a wedding veil from a sheer blouse, etc. “The Old Man ” a pantomime in which an old man sits drinking tea with his friend, and is choked to death and robbed by a murderer who approaches stealthily through a rear window, was portrayed by the Red Rock players, Mrs. Mayhew, Mrs. McLellan, Mrs Uvanile and Miss J. Callwood. Schreiber Valley Players, assisted by Owen Neill, Nipigon, were seen in a skit, “Free and Easy,” in which three attractive young ladies tried to vamp the hero on the boardwalk at a seaside resort. Incidental music was supplied by Mrs. Trudie Henderson and Owen Neill “Waiting at the Church” was the pantomime allotted to the Geraldton players, who were assisted by A. Zettler of Marathon, and Mr. Ross of the community programs branch. The skit depicted a wedding which almost failed to come off, when it was discovered as the bridal party arrived at the church that the wedding was supposed to have been held the following day, and the minister was not to be found. The janitor was ably portrayed by Mrs. J. C. Reid. The cast included Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. J. N. Reid, Mrs. L. Ryder, Mrs. Seegmiller, Gordon Goldie, Mr. Ross and Mr. Zettler. In discussing the skits at the conclusion of the brief program, Mr. Dunbar said he was pleased with the work the players had done, and that taking into consideration the short time allowed for preparation, he had very little criticism to offer. He commended the players on the versatility shown, and remarked that he had never before seen an entire group with such ability to throw themselves into their parts with so little preparation. Closing his final lecture, Mr. Dunbar issued an invitation to any members of the group to visit a rehearsal of the Guild Players in Fort William if the opportunity presented itself. An informal discussion was led by Mr. Ross as to the possibility of holding a drama festival in the area, and he stated a drama festival was the natural outgrowth of drama in smaller communities. He felt that the fact that players had come from such distances to attend the workshop in Nipigon was sufficient proof that the interest was present that would give drama a prominent place in the district.
