HCDSB Facility Management Services Superintendent Giacomo Corbacio told the Oakville Beaver last Thursday that a June review and audit of the St. Ann facility, which was built in 1965, revealed costly repairs of about $575,000 that made it "cost prohibitive" to continue operating and maintaining the now-vacant centre. The decision was made to relocate the Education Resource Centre staff to other surplus classroom spaces in Burlington, near the board's main Catholic Education Centre of ces, he said. However, with the St. Ann building vacant, HCDSB has been left with liability risks. To mitigate risks of vandalism, pest infestation and other potential issues, the windows have been boarded up, gas and water were turned off and all that is currently operating is electricity to provide security lighting and alarm systems for the facility, Corbacio explained. HCDSB staff is recommending the building be demolished at a cost of $200,000 and that the property be fenced off with a lockable gate that would allow access for only grasscutting vehicles, re trucks and ambulances. The report, presented to trustees last Tuesday (Oct. 20), states cost-saving bene ts as well as an increase in property value should the Board decide to sell the site. The news has some area residents worried of what's to come. Ward 1 Town councillors Ralph Robinson and Sean O'Meara said they have received some calls from their constituents about the state of the property and its future use. Over the last few months, residents have seen many ash trees cut down on the property because they were said to be infested with emerald ash borer (EAB), as well as moving trucks clearing out the building and windows of the school being boarded up. Robinson said residents feel HCDSB has plans for the property that it isn't "sharing with us." Corbacio said HCDSB staff is following protocol, which includes presenting their recommendations to trustees. Once a decision has been made on whether or not the building will be demolished, staff will be sending out communication to residents and posting information on the HCDSB website. "There's no plans to dispose of the building or sell it," he said, noting the priorities right now are to keep staff and students safe while being costef cient. The site will remain vacant like a couple of other sites HCDSB has, he added. In the meantime, while staff waits for a decision to be made about the former elementary school being torn down, the site has been offered to the Halton Regional Police Service so their of cers can go through training exercises, Corbacio added.
