B2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 6, 2001 Woman golfers take a swing at breast cancer By Christina Chabot SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER An after-rain mist lingers over the Glen Abbey Golf Course, but the spirit at the entrance of the club house in anything but damp. Over 150 women, includ ing 11-time amateur champi on Marlene Streit and Canada AM co-host Valerie Pringle, are packed into their golf carts, ready to battle it out for breast cancer at the annual Bell Classic women's golf tournament, held on Friday, May 25th. The event was sponsored by Bell Canada, and hosted by the Zonta Club of Oakville. "In the last three years, we've raised $250,000 for breast cancer," says Zontian Sandra Cronk. The concept of a golf toumament-tumedfundraiser was inspired by Betty Thompson, a victim of breast cancer and host of the children's T.V. show Romper Room. In 1992, the Zonta Club of Kitchener held its first tournament, and challenged other clubs to do follow suit. "This is one of eight Zonta golf tournaments going on around this time," continues Cronk. The $65,000 raised from the Oakville tournament will go to the future expansion of the Breast Centre at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. "We went to visit and they have a great reputation...it's a very caring hospital." The whistle blows, and the golf carts speed off towards the green. "These are mainly corpo rate women...you don't have to be a good golfer to play in this," says Cronk of the women who have paid $500 each for a day of golfing, cocktails, meals, a silent auc tion and gala dinner. "A lot of (the women) come to support the tourna ment because they've lost a family member to breast can cer," says Mamie Campbell, a Consultant with APEX Public Relations. The gala, featuring nine time LPGA Tour champion Sandra Post as emcee, was accompanied by a silent auc tion featuring over $23,000 in prizes, as well as a presenta tion by breast cancer survivor Feather Janz, who was diag nosed at the age of 23. Originally from Abbottsford, British Columbia, Janz found a lump in her left breast at age 20, and underwent a mastectomy three years later. Now 28, she spends her time speaking at events such as Ford Awareness Day breakfasts across Canada, delivering the message that "there is life after breast can cer". "A lot of women think that if you eat right and stay healthy, you're not at risk," comments Janz, who grew up on an organic food farm, and was, until recent ly, a fitness instructor and pre-school teacher. "There's no statistic - everyone's at risk." Although statistics state that most breast cancer sufferers are post menopausal women between the ages of 35 and 56, Janz emphasizes that the age range of the most vulnerable group includes mothers, aunts and grandmoth ers of young adults. "Part of my big shock factor," states Janz, "is that it does affect young women." In the face of such a serious disease, Janz tries to "dispell fear with hope" by educating women on the reality of the disease - the reality that 1 in 9 Canadian women will get breast cancer, while 1 in 25 of those women will die from it. Although women whose families have a history of the cancer are at a higher level of risk, Janz states that over 80% of suf ferers have no genetic link. "I use a lot of humour...I'm a big advocate of education for young women," says Janz. Teaching women self-examination at an early age is vital to preventing the disease from spreading. -- _______ R iziero V e rto lli S i u n c tc u f ^ fitn e / 0 , 2 0 0 / 12:00 noon - 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of Appleby College 540 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville S outh o f QEW, West o f D orval (rain o r shine) Tickets Available - 905-270-6636 Ext. 221 Price - $75.00 each - $50.00 Tax Receipt Greta's See us on C HM O R N IN GLIVE Canada AM co-host Valerie Pringle was one of the 150 golfers at the Bell Classic charity golf tournament.
