Opening statements made in Saw-Whet OMB hearing by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Friday, October 16, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearing to determine the fate of the former Saw-Whet Golf Course began at Town Hall Tuesday, with stakeholders presenting their opening statements to the board chair. The hearing, which is expected to last at least five weeks, is examining Bronte Green Corporation's application to develop the 55-hectare property at 1401 Bronte Rd. The developer wants to build 760 residences on the Saw-Whet property, including 520 singledetached homes, 104 back-to-back dwellings, 125 townhouses and 11 single-detached residential condominiums. The plan has raised concern among many area residents, who fear the loss of green space. Bronte Green's development application went before the Town of Oakville in March 2014 and Bronte Green appealed the matter to the OMB in October 2014, citing the Town's failure to deliver a timely decision. In her opening statement, Bronte Green lawyer Patricia Foran noted, according to the Town's Official Plan, the lands in question are appropriate for development. She argued the company has carried out enough studies and done enough comprehensive planning for the project to move forward. Foran also pointed out while the Town has been quick to find multiple issues with the Bronte Green proposal, it has brought forward no alternative plan to give direction on how these issues could be resolved. She concluded the Town has taken an unreasonable position against this development, which she claimed was made clear during a public speech by Oakville Mayor Rob Burton in which she said he told residents all of the Merton Lands (which includes the former Saw-Whet Golf Course) would be preserved. The witnesses called by Bronte Green will discuss the work done for the development plan with discussions focusing on a traffic impact study, development application, geotechnical report, water balance report, aquatic ecology report and more. The Town of Oakville, represented by Catherine Lyons, argued the proposed project is not merely a case of infill development. Long-standing communities, regional infrastructure, and protected Parkway Belt lands surround the former golf course. Lyons said there is concern about the impacts the development could have on these neighbours and vice-versa and as such, the matter should be studied in a comprehensive, co-ordinated and integrated manner. see Public on p.7 inside today's Editorial Artscene Beaver www.insideHALTON.com 6 30 Sports Classified 33 38 Alexanian Carpet and Flooring Home Hardware Oakville Marketplace New Homes Real Estate Perfect Wedding Concept Lighting *All flyers not necessarily delivered to all homes For home delivery & customer service call 905-631-6095, 5300 Harvester Rd., Burlington New subscriptions call 905-631-6095 or subscribe online @ www.oakvillebeaver.com Sore Feet, Sports Injury, Painful Ingrown Toenails?
