- Hereditary Chiefs State Mohawk 'Revolt' Is Slated For Today
A delegation of Six Nations Indian warriors announced in Hamilton yesterday that starting today hereditary tribal chiefs are taking over governmental authority on the Brant-Haldimand reserve.
The transfer of authority from the hands of the present elected councillors will begin at 10:30 a.m.
THE GROUP of warriors, wearing tribal regalia, visited RCMP heaquarters here to give notice of the change. They are also sending a telegram of their proclamation to Ottawa.
The warriors described the elected council as a "puppet government." They have been clamoring for some time for its replacement by the "true Indian government of the Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy of North America."
RESOLUTION TO vest authority in the old tribal chiefs and to appoint their own police was taken recently at the tribal meeting in the Onondaga Longhouse.
The meeting was attended by over 1,000 Indians.
"Neither the Canadian government nor the RCMP have the right to interfere in our affairs," said Arthur Powless, one of the warriors.
Irving Logan, another of the warriors, said that the decision to transfer authority to the old tribal chiefs was backed by most Six Nations Indians.
"WE HAVE THE support of the great majority," he said.
The hereditary chiefs, backed by the warriors, claim that they have thousands of signatures on a petition to be sent to Ottawa asking that they be restored to the power they held before the Indian Act of 1924 instituted the elective system.
