www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 15, 2015 | 26 INVENTORY Getting the conversation started continued from p.22 The mental health initiative was created earlier, following Fiorella's son Lucas' suicide on Oct. 12, 2014. He was only 19. Fiorella said the inspiration came from the stories others shared about Lucas and how, even though Lucas was quietly dealing with his own pain over the years, he was helping others. "One student in her senior year of high school told me she had been going through a rough period in her life and was planning to kill herself when Lucas intervened," he said. "Lucas noticed she was down and said, `Hello, are you OK?'" The girl was so taken aback that someone paid attention to her, said Fiorella. Lucas stayed with her, talked to her and walked her home so she could get help, he explained. "Lucas opened our eyes to the epidemic of mental health issues among students and the need to raise awareness of both the issues, and of the many resources that are in place to help them cope with stress, anxiety, depression and the challenges of school," he said. Having the first two benches installed at Holy Trinity and Carleton is meaningful to Fiorella as they were the schools Lucas attended. Each bench serves as a visual reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and conversations, but it also features the tagline "yellow is for hello" and a URL where students can quickly access on-campus and local mental health services. Fiorella instructed Holy Trinity students on how to use the bench. "Step 1, you walk up to the bench. Step 2, sit down on the bench. Step 3, eat your lunch, take a nap, chat with friends -- in other words, use the bench the way you would use any other bench," he explained. "There's really nothing special about it from a utilitarian sense. What I do ask is that every time you walk by it, every time you see `yellow is for hello', to think about your own mental health, and that of your friends." He added it's OK to feel stressed and anxious, it's normal to have those emotions. "What's not OK is to remain silent about it because it's in that silence that stress and anxiety can become depression," said Fiorella. Holy Trinity Principal Justine O'Grady said the bench will be an additional tool to increase student and staff awareness on strategies and programs in support of mental health. "It's a beautiful visible reminder to our students every day that there are people who care about them, there are people who they can reach out to and there's lots of support in our school and the community," she said. "My hope is when they walk through that atrium, it is that constant, visible reminder." Visit Thefriendshipbench.org or Facebook. com/friendshipbench for more information.
