Young said municipal leaders have listed transportation infrastructure projects as a priority and noted he recently announced a partnership between the federal and provincial government, on the construction of an underpass at the busy Burloak Drive crossing. Oakville NDP candidate Che Marville said her party would immediately invest $1.3 billion into a transportation plan -- with some of it coming to Oakville. Oakville Liberal candidate John Oliver said his party would focus on infrastructure investment for transit, including GO service improvements. He also looked to social infrastructure, such as daycare, seniors' housing and affordable housing. "I cannot tell you the number of people I ran into in Oakville in worn-out, regional-assisted housing," said Oliver. "We need to make investments in existing infrastructure as well." Pointing to flooding in Burlington, he said it is important for the government to improve drainage systems and sanitary sewers and called for investment in green infrastructure and renewal. Oakville North--Burlington Conservative candidate Effie Triantafilopoulos listed transit and road construction as priorities and said since 2006, the federal government has invested $458 million in Halton's infrastructure -- including the Dundas Street widening, rehabilitation and Transportation at the top of infrastructure wish list resurfacing of various Oakville roads and water purification plant upgrades. Oakville North--Burlington NDP candidate Janice Best said an NDP government would hike transfers to municipalities by $1.5 billion annually for core infrastructure projects and $1.3 billion for public transit projects in its first mandate. "We will provide predictable, dedicated federal funding for important projects," said Best. Oakville North--Burlington Liberal candidate Pam Damoff noted Oakville recently started a stormwater master plan, which will need funding. Damoff said the Liberal Party would work with municipalities to complete projects like it. Young defended Canada's mission against the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL), stating Canada has not been attacked on its own soil since the War of 1812 because, when conflict erupted in the world, Canadian soldiers went to it. "We sent 600 troops to train (those fighting ISIS) and six fighter jets to push back ISIL before they murdered thousands and thousands more people," said Young. "Both opposition leaders would not support this. If you don't support joining with your allies from stopping a horrible force like ISIL from murdering, and raping women, when will you ever support military force? The answer is you won't do it until they are on our soil, which history has taught us is too late." Marville said the way to fight ISIL is not to just drop bombs, which also kill civilians. "We have to get back to being champions of democracy, of peace, and ambassadors and consensus-makers in the world," she said. "This Conservative government has not been focused on that.
