This newest Jeep off-roader is destined to replace the Cherokee, an aging but still popular model that has been around for the past 18 seasons. Positioned between the TJ and its bigger-brother Grand Cherokee, the Cherokee's amazing longevity is the result of its nearly perfect blend of sensible size, interior comfort and robust six-cylinder power. But with manufacturers of all stripes jumping into the lucrative compact SUV mar ket, it was only a matter of time before this Jeep stalwart would be slated for retirement. In the past few years there were a number of clues and hints that the Cherokee's impending replacement was near. Lately, the folks at Jeep have been displaying a num ber of concept products at var ious car shows to gauge public reaction and prepare Cherokee fans for change. This, the final year for the Cherokee, marks the introduc tion of the 2002 Liberty, or KJ in DaimlerChrysler's product code parlance. The Liberty is a n e w -fro m -th e -lu g -n u ts -u p model without so much as an ounce of carry-over content from the Cherokee. Although it appears no larger than its much older counterpart, the Liberty is constructed longer, wider and considerably taller. In fact, the Liberty even enjoys a slight height advan tage over the top-dog Grand Cherokee and receives a simi lar track width. The Liberty is built at a completely new plant in Toledo, Ohio that's capable of cranking out a world-wide supply of 200,000 vehicles a year. The Jeep's designers have done a superb job with the Liberty in terms of brand iden tification. With a verticallyslotted grille positioned boldly upright between its round headlights, Jeep spotters will see the Liberty coming a mile away. Completely new Cherokee replacement is longer, wider and taller, resulting in a significant improvement in interior roominess. The Liberty sports a completely modem suspension and stiffer platform designed to improve both ride and han dling. All-new engine choices. Available 4x4 systems come with a twospeed transfer case - a rarity in this class of SUV. The external spare-tire carrier combined with a 65/35 split-folding back seat also helps ensure maxi mum cargo carrying Versatili tyMaintaining a firm, yet compliant ride for the Liberty is an all-new independent front suspension combined with a Grand Cherokeeinspired rear coil spring setup. The Liberty's underpinnings allow for eight inches of sus pension travel so it can more easily handle bolder-strewn off-road terrain. The entire suspension assembly is attached to a platform that is the stiffest of the entire Jeep lineup. Creating the brand new Liberty also required tossing out the Cherokee's ancient, AMC-designed inline-six engine. For starters, there's a 150-horsepower 2 ,4-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that is equipped only with a five-speed automatic trans mission. However for maxi mum performance, buyers can select an available 3.7-liter SOHC V6 that creates 210 horsepower and 235 Ib.-ft. of torque. The V6 is actually based on the Grand Cherokee's 4.7-liter V8. A five-speed manual, or optional four-speed automatic trans mission can be connected to this motor.
