The following article is a first-person account o f someone who has gone through PPD. I was a first time mother at 32. I held a masters degree, and a very demanding job with a major bank. I had a loving husband, and a strong support system of family and friends. I wasn't supposed to get depressed. I was supposed to be overcome with joy at the birth of my daughter. But things don't always work out as planned. I didn't sleep for 72 hours after my daughter was bom. Then after coming home from the hospital I found that I couldn't sleep. My brain would not shut off. I kept thinking about horrible things that could happen; the baby falling out of my arms, leaving her on the hood of the car in her car seat and driving off, and many other scary thoughts. These thoughts would scare me badly and leave me shak en but wide awake, convinced that if I fell asleep she would stop breathing. During that summer I began to feel more and more isolated. I didn't have any friends close by who were home, or even had children. I had no one to talk to, and nothing to do. (Due to an injury I was unable to get out or even take a walk). I also began to feel as if I was losing control of myself. Although I never hurt my daughter I began to feel that it was only a matter of time. I would become frustrated and angry with her, and begin to lose my temper. I would have to put her down in the crib or car seat and walk away to regain control. I was terrified at who I was becoming. I didn't want to admit to myself that I was in trouble. I didn't want to tell my husband for fear that he would never again trust me with the care of our baby. I couldn't tell my mother or mother-inlaw, after all they had managed to have children without one minutes problem, or so they said. I didn't want anyone to think that something was wrong with me. I was afraid that they would think I was crazy. So I put on a brave face and struggled alone for four months. My salvation was in contacting the New Parents Helpline run by PASSCAN. At first I only request ed information on any mother's groups in the area. I joined a local group that week and began to imme diately feel better. The women in my group were very matter of fact about the difficulties that some had faced after having children. I found that I could admit my doubts and fears without fear of judge ment. Through talking with my wonderful new friends, and the constant and loving support of my husband I have recovered, and am happy to say that I am eagerly awaiting the birth of our second child. This time, however, I will be armed with the knowl edge that although PPD may strike, I can and will survive and be happy. Photo by Barrie Erskine The three drivers of these vehicles escaped with minor injuries following an accident on Hwy. 5 yesterday morning that saw the highway closed when a pickup involved in the crash caught fire. Man faces charges in fiery crash A 37-year old Brampton man is facing charges in the wake of Tuesday morning's fiery crash on Dundas Street East. According to Halton Regional Police, the incident began around 10:30 a.m. when a GMC pickup truck stopped in the westbound passing lane of Dundas as the driver prepared to make a left turn into The Original Garden Centre. A Ford pickup that was travelling west bound on Dundas struck the rear of the GMC. The force of the collision propelled the GMC into the eastbound lanes where it struck a Cadillac. After all three occupants exited their vehi cles, the Ford truck caught fire. The Oakville Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze. One occupant of the Cadillac received minor injuries and was transported to Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for treatment. Dundas between Eighth and Ninth Lines was closed for approximately an hour for inves tigation and clean-up.
