Traditionally, gardeners dig a deep hole, surround the tree root ball or bare roots with fresh topsoil, cattle manure or peat moss and then tightly packed it down. Initially, there's good growth but once the roots reach the hard packed origi nal soil, this outward growth stops. Instead of spreading into the surrounding soil, the roots encircle the planti ng pit like the roots of the potted plant. Then they liter ally strangle the growth of the tree. This is termed the " bath tub" effect.
