The Official Plan Amendment proposes to: incorporate those lands north of Dundas Street into the Town of Oakville's urban area as identified within Regional Official Plan Number 8. establish the conditions for the development of the lands north of Dundas Street; and redefine the Town's municipal structure to reflect this change including revisions to the plan concept, goal and objectives, planning period and planning population and employment levels. Two open houses will be hosted by the Planning Services Department at which time details of the proposed Official Plan Amendment will be presented and public concerns noted. The walk to be held on Saturday May 26, from noon to 4 p.m., will be a fundraiser for schizophrenia research. Organizers hope to raise $21,000 for the Bill Jefferies Research Fund for Schizophrenia - named in honour of the organization's Oakville founder in addition to raising awareness of mental health issues. Registration for The W izard of Hope Walk begins at noon at Town Hall. 1225 Trafalgar Rd. Walkers will set off with the `Wizard,' Town Crier Ian Burkholder, the Burlington Teen Tour Band, plus local Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, at 1:15 p.m., and walk south along Trafalgar Road to Oakville Place. Upon arrival, free lunch and refresh ments will be served at 2:45 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the most pledges collected, the most original costumes, and various other door prizes. Afterwards, participants will walk back to Town Hall. Walkers can register in advance at the SSO kiosk at Oakville Place from May 21 to 27. Representatives from mental health agencies from across Halton have been invited to dress up and participate as characters from the movie, the Wizard o f Oz. A clown from Buttons & Bows will paint faces and sell animal bal loons. x The Wizard of Hope theme was cho sen for this walk, as The Wizard sym bolizes hope, the Lion stands for courage, the Tin Man for heart, the Scarecrow for knowledge and Dorothy for will. All of these strengths are required to counter the stigma of schiz ophrenia, says Grant. Schizophrenia is a biological dis ease of the mind, affecting one in 100 Canadians. It is usually brought on by stress factors between the ages of 16 and 25 - contrary to the popular belief that it is an emotional disorder. "It's a split from reality," explains Grant, whose son was diagnosed at 16, but is now making his way through col lege. "It's a lifetime illness, but it's episodal. You might have one bad episode, but never relapse again." This is the mildest form of the dis ease a schizophrenic may experience. `T here are negative and positive sides of the disease," explains Grant. "Sufferers go into a psychosis, they hear voices, have hallucinations and psychotic episodes. They withdraw from society."* And what is the worst case sce nario? "They end up in institution," states Grant. Lack of family and community support enhances the number of unnec essarily admitted patients, she says. "People have to realize that this is not just an individual disorder - it's a community disorder, too." Co-owner of Indian Food Restaurant, Shri Sharma, is grateful to the community for their support and patron age, pleased to say that if it weren' t for them, he never would have had the opportunity to expand and renovate. The first thing one sees upon entering the new Indian Food Restaurant is the tent made from hand woven, brightly coloured silk banners. The fabric, used for both the windows and the tent, was import ed from India, said Sharma, who with his wife, Rani, operate the restaurant on behalf of their son Ajay, the owner. "This fabric came from the western state in India, Rajashtan, the only place where it is available, and popular, in these sharp colours." Sharma explained Indian cooking involves using more than 100 herbs and spices for the various dishes, everything from basmati rice to rice and peas, mixed vegetables (potatoes, carrots, peas and spices), vegetable korma (cauliflower, potatoes, peas, and spices), an eggplant dish with tomatoes, lentil dal, potatoes - all vegetarian dishes, plus halal meats - lamb, chicken and goat. The lunch, din ner and weekend buffets come with Naan bread, condiments and sauces. "Each dish has its own combination of spices for flavouring," he said. "Plus, a lot of Indian spices have medicinal values. "We don' t use MSG, bases or lard. We don't use food that' s already been prepared, and we make all of our own sauces, yogurt and cheese." Singh is assisted in the kitchen by Mani Chauhan, who has worked at the Indian Food Restaurant for six years, plus one other assistant cook The move has resulted in two new additions, a waiter and a bar. The Indian Food Restaurant is now licensed to serve beer and wine,' and the new waiter is "a close family friend," Surya Policetty, who has worked the `hotel strip' on Airport Road both as a waiter and maitre' d', said Sharma. The Sharmas have been in business in Oakville since the mid Banquet/Wedding facilities for up to 200 people 1980s, having operated a concession stand at Bronte *Creek Your hosts Peter & Mike Provincial Park before opening the Indian Food Restaurant.
