www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 3, 2015 | 38 Retracing Terry Fox's run through Bronte with lunch fundraiser A local restaurateur will once again host a fundraiser lunch for the Oakville Terry Fox Run tomorrow (Friday). The third annual event, to be held at Sammy's Famous Old Fashion Chip Wagon, 2376 Lakeshore Rd. W., in Bronte will see its lunch proceeds go directly to support this year's 35th annual charity run. "Terry Fox ran a full marathon every day for more than half a year to raise money and awareness for improved research and treatment for all forms of cancer," said chip wagon owner Sammy Rawdah. "It is the least we can do to honour his legacy by retracing his steps through Bronte and celebrating his memory and helping to achieve his dream by donating all proceeds from lunch on Sept. 4 to cancer research in Terry's name." All proceeds from lunch sales between 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday will be donated to the local run. To date, Rawdah's fundraiser has collected $2,000 towards the cause. Each year, as Rawdah prepares to host his pre-run lunch fundraiser, he leads supporters along the same route Terry himself took through Bronte along Lakeshore Road in memory of the young man who changed Canadian history. Residents looking to participate in the symbolic walk are asked to arrive at Sammy's Famous Old Fashion Chip Wagon at 11 a.m. "The support of local businesses like Sammy's Famous is so important to the Oakville community and to the success of the Terry Fox Run," said Ward 2 Councillor Pam Damoff, who is also the Oakville Terry Fox Run chair. "By teaming up with the Terry Fox Run to raise funds for cancer research, Sammy's is continuing a long-standing commitment to improving the lives of everyone who lives in Oakville." This year's local Terry Fox Run will be held Sunday, Sept. 20 at Coronation Park at 10 a.m., with a 9 a.m. registration. Participants can walk, bike, roller skate, board, run, push a stroller or walk the dog along a lakeside two-kilometre, 5k or 10k route. Oakville's 2014 Run raised a record total of $132,500. For the 35th anniversary, Oakville organizers have set the goal to raise $1 for every Oakville resident -- a total of $187,200.
