Blades expect Next generation leads Burloak to second-place finish at nationals to improve as season goes along by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff 39 | Thursday, September 10, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com continued from p.38 wards are Ryan Garvey, Jackson Bales and Christian Rajic, an Oakville-born trio which combined for 35 goals and 88 points in 124 games last season but is already showing it is capable of contributing more this season. Garvey, the newly-appointed captain, scored the game-tying goal with 30 seconds to go in regulation time Friday, and Rajic has collected two goals and an assist in two games. Key additions to the forward ranks include Ethan Nother, who had 47 goals last year in midget; Drew Worrad, a Clarkson University commit; Peyton Reeves, who Daley projects as a two-way, physical player; and Holland, the OT hero in the opener. Nother and Reeves missed Friday's game against Burlington because they were attending OHL camps. "We have more speed," said the 19-year-old Garvey. "Not that we weren't fast last year, but we have lots of young guys who bring speed and skill to the table." "We're not overly big, but we have skilled guys who will finish their checks," added Holland, a 17-year-old Whitby native who does not see this year as a building block for next season. "In my opinion, we're already a good team. When we get more experience, we're only going to get better." NOTES: Joshua Rettinger, Rajic and Kosack scored Oakville's first three goals last Friday. Kudla had three assists and McGlynn made 40 saves... Burlington looked to have won the game in the first overtime, but an apparent goal was disallowed because the Oakville net was off its moorings... The Cougars had nine power-play opportunities Friday, compared to Oakville's four... Saturday in Georgetown, the Raiders scored the first five goals of the game before Rajic put Oakville on the scoreboard with 1:02 to go in the second period. Oliver Benwel scored the Blades' other goal late in the third... Following tomorrow's home opener against the Raiders, the Blades will visit the Mississauga Chargers Saturday for an 8 p.m. start. For more than a decade, the Burloak Canoe Club has been able to draw on a stable of paddlers with international experience, including a number of Olympians. That helped the Oakville club dominate the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak Championships, bringing home the burgee four times in a fiveyear span between 2007 and 2011. But after a busier-than-usual summer for the senior paddlers with both the Pan Am Games and the world championships in the six weeks before nationals, Burloak needed strong performances from its younger paddlers in order to extend its streak of top-three finishes at nationals to 11 years. "We've leaned really heavily on our seniors for a long time, but we've got a lot of younger kids, and it's a big group and they're pretty good," said Burloak head coach Adam Oldershaw. "It was one of the things we identified and started to target a while ago. When you put together a multi-year plan and start working toward it, it's rewarding to see it pay off." Burloak claimed 42 medals, including 18 gold, on its way to a second-place finish behind the Rideau Canoe Club at the national championships recently in Ottawa. Among the group of young paddlers forming the next generation at Burloak is Sam Pennyfather, who earned a trio of gold medals, including a pair of dominating victories in his individual events. Pennyfather, who reached the semifinals at the world junior championships this summer, swept the under-19 men's C-1 500-metre and 1,000m events. In the 500m, Pennyfather won by four seconds. In the 1,000m, he was every bit as strong and then continued to pull away from the field in the second half of the race, winning by a whopping 11 seconds.
