Child literacy advocate Mogus receives scholarship by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Friday, August 28, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville student and child literacy advocate Julia Mogus has received a scholarship award of $10,000 in recognition of her work with the community. Ontario's largest credit union, Meridian, announced recently Mogus was the recipient of the Commitment to Communities Sean Jackson Scholarship. The scholarship is named for Meridian's former CEO and community leader, Sean Jackson, and is awarded to an Ontario student who has demonstrated a strong commitment to their community while achieving academic excellence. "In addition to her impressive academic achievements, what really set Julia apart from the other applicants was her impressive passion and drive to foster youth literacy, both locally and internationally," said Bill Maurin, president and CEO of Meridian. "Her ability to identify a problem in the community and act on a sustainable solution is awe-inspiring and truly embodies the spirit of this scholarship." Since age 10, Mogus has spent more than 3,000 volunteer hours advocating for youth literacy. A self-proclaimed "bookworm aficionado," her passion for literacy led her to co-create all children. Meridian's scholarship brings me one step closer to achieving that goal." The Niagara Community Foundation administers Meridian's Commitment to Communities Sean Jackson Scholarship.
