ITS OUR NEWEST GIMMICK...WE CUSTOMER THINKS SHE'S GETTING MORE FOR HER MONEY BOT ITS REALLY JUST A SMALLER CART.' This is Boy Scout and Girl Guide Week across Canada. It is observed annually in February, with Feb. 22nd, the birthday of the founder, Lord Baden Powell, and also his lady, Olave, marked as a particularly special day for all scouts and guides throughout the wbrld. B.P., as he is affectionately known everywhere, is the founder of the boy scout movement which started in 1907 in England. Two years later, a great scout rally was held at the Crystal Palace and some of the sisters of the participating scouts wanted to join in the fun. Thus the need for girl guides was realized and B.P.'s sister, Agnes, was called upon to organize the first girl guide company under the direction of her famous brother. After Lord and Lady Baden Powell were married, his wife, Olave, became as involved in the by now international move- ment as was her husband. She was named World Chief Guide in 1930 and travelled all over the world with her husband who was World Chif Scout. Indeed, after his death in Kenya in 1941, she continued to give all her time to this wonderful organization which her husband had started. She retired in 1969, but her interest in the universal movement is still as keen today as it was in the beginning. B. P. loved young people and had tremendous faith in their ability to accept responsibility and shared with them an unquenchable zest for life. If only more adults would share the concern of this great man, and devote some time to helping others lead the movement today, even more young people could take advantage of the scout and guide training which goes such a long way in turning today's youth into tomorrow's leaders of our municipalities, our province and our country.
