OYS is happy to share Oakville treasure with tourists continued from p.6 This structure was destroyed by a storm that packed 35-ft. waves in April 1886. The replacement was built by Henry George, a Port Elgin contractor at a cost of $960. A storm in 1947 washed away the harbour pier, leaving the light an island unto itself until a more rugged steel and cement structure was built. In 1960, the Canadian Department of Transportation replaced the lighthouse with a modern steel structure and abandoned the original. The OYS and concerned residents salvaged the original lighthouse and moved it to its present location outside the OYS facility at the Oakville Harbour. Doug Armour, the first Commodore of the OYS, successfully petitioned Ottawa for the OYS to take ownership of the shattered lighthouse. OYS representatives say more than $11,000 was spent rebuilding the lighthouse, which was officially re-opened June 19, 1963. Since then additional refurbishments have taken place in 1990, 2007, 2012, and 2013 at a cost of thousands of dollars and many hours of work by OYS members each time. Current OYS Commodore Don Fitzsimons said the OYS Lighthouse is one of the few 19th century lighthouses remaining on Lake Ontario. In 1991 the lighthouse was declared a Heritage Structure. Fitzsimons said a lot of work by the OYS went into preparing the lighthouse for its American visitors including some shingle replacement and fresh paint. They also had to remove sailing paraphernalia that had been stored inside the structure. Fitzsimons said people coming by to see the lighthouse is not completely new. Earlier this summer, he said, a couple from Kansas came by to look inside the lighthouse and take pictures of it. The next day a couple from Florida came by with the same request. "We're having fun," said Fitzsimons. "It's our lighthouse and we really do treasure it here." 21 | Thursday, August 13, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com You can... ction-sp u d e r x a .t Go to www ief video r br to view ou 3.9373 ext. 9 7.70 or call 187 ils eta for more d ner Retire soo s Save taxe tax free t u o s g n i ss earn e n i s u b t Ge m ecialists.co Ava Now le! ilab Vitapur Counter Top Coolers Reg. $99 Now only $89.00 plus tax NEW CUSTOMER OFFER: For a limited time...
