Halton Regional Police are reminding residents to be wary of people identifying themselves on the telephone as being representatives of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Police say fraudsters continue to make calls purporting to be agents of the CRA, in an attempt to steal money from people. The latest scam is disguising their call display number by using a Halton Regional Police number. On Monday, an Oakville resident received a call from a man with a British accent claiming he was employed with the CRA. The male stated the resident owed the government a large sum in taxes. The resident hung up on the caller. Moments later a second call was received from a male with an East Indian accent who requested the same payment. The resident hung up again. Third call displays Halton police phone number A third call came in, this one displayed as a Halton police phone number, 905-825-4747. A male identi ed himself as a police of cer and informed the resident they would be arrested if the tax payment was not made. The resident hung up and called Halton police. The Halton Regional Police Fraud Unit is reminding the public to be aware of tax scams, learn how to protect personal information and nances, and share that information with family and friends. "The No. 1 rule is not to take immediate action, request a name and badge number and advise you will call them back," stated a press release.
