www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, July 24, 2015 | 8 Town backs Charter right for a healthy environment by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff Oakville council voted Monday to endorse the David Suzuki Foundation's Blue Dot Campaign, which calls on the federal government to amend the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and recognize citizens' rights to a healthy environment. More than 60 Canadian municipalities have made "Blue Dot declarations" in some form since the campaign was launched in September 2014. The David Suzuki Foundation is carrying out the campaign in partnership with the Canadian environmental group Ecojustice. "Council and I are very much committed to the livability and well-being of our community," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "The Blue Dot Campaign supports our efforts in creating a healthy environment for residents by asking the provincial and federal governments to make the same commitment municipalities have made." Council's resolution will be forwarded to the Prime Minister of Canada and the Premier of Ontario in an effort to have the federal and provincial governments enshrine the right of all Canadians to live in a healthy environment in appropriate legislation. The core elements of the Blue Dot Campaign include: · The right to breathe clean air · The right to drink clean water · The right to consume safe food · The right to access nature · The right to know about pollutants and contaminants released into the local environment · The right to participate in decisionmaking that will affect the environment The motion, moved by Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff and seconded by Ward 4 Town and Regional Councillor Allan Elgar, received unanimous support from Town council.
