Well, you're not alone. According to a recent survey of work-'til-we-drop Canadians, 48% feel guilty when we leave work'on time. What this astonishing statistic says, according to peopie who know about these things, is* that we have skewed priorities. No kidding. Everyone and his brother have spent tfte past decade telling us we work too hard. W hat they haven't told us is how boring we have become. How many times have you been asked hew your life is going and you respond, almost automatically, with the mantra o f modem life: I'm busy. But as local author and stress man agement expert Dr. David Posen point ed out in a radio interview recently, most of us feel as though we have no choice, but to do exactly this - work ourselves to death. Companies down size, marketplace competition gets more intense, and technology allows us all to be in touch with everything - and everyone - all of the time. We do this not only because we feel we have to, but also because we can. It's like the constant health care conundrum: it's there, so why not use it? More pills, more excuses to use the pills. More pagers, more cell phones, more opportunities to never be alone. Years ago, we were told to go home for a few days and rest; doctors today know few people can afford to do this. Fact is, we work when we're sick; we work when we're healthy; we work even when we don't have to. I can't tell you how many spouses bemoan the fact their partners call in for messages or check their e-mail, even on holidays. But perhaps the worst o f it is when we take pride in our own frenetic pace of life; we wear it proudly on our chests the way we used to take pride in our own sense of volunteer activities, (can't do it; too busy). And then along comes a guy with his priorities straight. Take, for exam ple, a story I heard last week. A woman taking a lesson at a ski resort told me she was riding up a chairlift and her instructor pointed out another instruc tor weaving his way gracefully down the hill. "See that guy?" he waved his arm towards the downhill ski instructor, calling him the resort's best instructor. He asked her to guess the man's age. She peered down from her perch on the chairlift. She wasn't sure, but she guessed him to be about 45 or 50. "He's 80," responded her instructor. He went on to say that not only does he ski all winter and is known as the best ski instructor at the resort, the 80year old man spends his summers mountain biking. Eighty years old and he skis and bikes. And probably never gives it a thought, so much is he clearly doing what he loves to do. There's a man with his priorities straight. You wouldn't even have to ask the guy if he enjoys life: it's there in his face. Or take another guy who spent 48 hours clinging to a raft in the sea with his father after their boat capsized. Asked what it was like to literally cling to life in the open sea, he spoke about how he got disoriented as night fell and the water got even chillier. He thought a lot about his life. And what he thought about wasn't a bigger house or a bigger car. He didn't (surprise, surprise) spend any time thinking about what was happening back at the office. He just thought about the goofy stuff he did with his eight -year -old daughter. And he vowed when it was all over to spend more time with her. Back to Dr. Posen, stress manage ment guru. We've all got more choices than we think we do, he says. If we choose to kill ourselves by working ourselves to death, we'll be able to do it. But we don't have to. We have lots of choices. And so we do. At the very least, we should be able to do better than dig our cell phone out of our purses at church, answer pages from behind the bench at a hockey game or send e-mails at mid night. Life is way better than that. Just ask the 80-year-old ski instruc tor whizzing down the hill, snow falling gently around him, in the early morning as the lifts open.
