Over the past 10 years this annual event has raised $600,000 divided between the Canadian Cancer Society (ticket sales) and silent and live auction funds, which are given to the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Hosted by Angelo, Jean Rizzuti and their families, the event is held in honor of Angelo Rizzuti's father John and his father-in-law John Lopez. Both men succumbed to cancer within a year during 1991 -92. Their families have organized this annual fundraiser to help eradicate cancer. The families donate all of the food and services for a five-course dinner as well as use of their two large ban quet rooms. As a result, the adminis tration costs are - nil. All proceeds will be given clear of costs to the two charities. The evening begins at 6.15 p.m. with cocktails and a Daffodil Garden of special items of affordable "gifts". Dinner and a live auction will follow at 7.30 p.m. Music for dancing after dinner will be provided by The Johnny T Orchestra. Cost of the tickets has not increased in the 10 years and remains at $75 each with a $50 tax receipt given for each purchase. To date, the tickets for the event are limited. Halton Healthcare Services has recently acquired a new system, by Expeditor Systems, to help organize and manage the workload in the newly renovated emergency room at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). The first of its kind in Ontario, this unique system facil itates the delivery of quality care in a more efficient and timely manner by following patients through their emer gency department visit from triage to discharge. A series o f wall-sized Electronic Patient Flow Display Boards located throughout the department and multiple data terminals function as the control centre o f the entire emergency department. While maintaining patient confidentiality, the tracking boards display key information regarding the patient's sta tus such as pending tests and orders. The system queues the order in which patients need to be seen, tracks patient reassessments, tests, and orders, and alerts staff to exces sive treatment delays. All this activity shows up on the tracking board as it happens and is time-stamped and captured for statistical purposes. "With one glance at the board, I can see w hat's happen ing in the entire department. The system pinpoints the bot tlenecks as they happen so I can respond immediately by calling in another doctor, a technician -w hoever it takes to move things along." explains M adeline Hardabura, Emergency Room Charge Nurse at OTMH. "The im plem entation o f the Five level Canadian Emergency Department Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) guidelines, has had a significant impact on the operation of the Emergency Department," explained Janet Skupsky, Program Leader of the Emergency Department at OTMH. CTAS guidelines established five triage category standards for triage time, (with one being critical and five being least serious) as well as the amount of time that can lapse between patient assessments and reassessments at each triage level. The Expeditor System was modified to meet Electronic display board keeps | track of emergency room patients I I these guidelines and to suit the OTMH internal environ ment by integrating it with the hospital's other systems. "Expeditor will play a major role in ensuring patient safety by helping the care team meet the CTAS guidelines," explained Skupsky. "In addition to improving day-to-day operations, the system can also generate a wide range of quality reports to help manage resources and to assist in both our internal continuous quality improvement initia tives as well as our external reporting requirement's to the Ministry." "From an Information Technology standpoint, the Expeditor System is simpler than most of the other systems we reviewed. The merit of this system is in the intuitive simple logic on which it is based - not in its software," explained Vert Rayner, Director of Information Systems. "The system's strength is confined to tracking, but it does that better than any other system we know of." "Any tracking system can only work effectively if you have end-user compliance. We picked Expeditor because it was the easiest to use for our doctors and nurses. Everything is at a push of a button. They don't need to worry about how the software works." explained Rayner. "The system is elegant in its simplicity and our users embraced it without any resistance. In fact, they started using it as soon as they were trained before the scheduled `live' date. A testament to how they felt it improved their work environment." -- Subm itted by Zita Raponi, Public Relations Associate, Halton Healthcare Services. The 540 (Oakville) Squadron was formed under a char ter granted by the Air Cadet League o f Canada on 27 October 1951. In 1959, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of powered flight in Canada, the Royal Canadian Air Force formed a flight demonstration team known as the "Golden Hawks." When the team was disbanded in 1964, 540 Squadron petitioned the federal government to assume the unit's name and identity as its own. The Department of National Defense granted permission in 1968 and since that time 540 Squadron has been proud to officially carry the name "The Golden Hawks." The aim of the cadet movement in Canada is to develop in youth ages 12 to 19 attributes of good citizenship and leadership, and to promote physical fitness and stimulate an interest o f the Canadian Forces. Currently, there are 100 active cadets in the 540 Golden Hawks Air Cadet Squadron with four Officers and five civilian Cadet Instructors under the command o f Major Don Bryce. Also assisting Major Bryce and his staff is a Parent Sponsoring Committee comprised of a number of cadet and former cadet parents. Last summer 50 cadets from the squadron were accept ed into various summer camps including one power schol arship, two glider scholarships and a third accepted into the air traffic control program. Many of these cadets excelled in their camps winning a number of awards.
