THE OAKVILLE BEAVER -- Wednesday March 21, 2001 "Volunteers needed for Oakville Super Cities Walk for MS The Halton chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society will hold its second annual Oakville Super Cities Walk for MS on April 22. The walk will start and finish at Oaklands Regional Centre, 53 Bond St. There will be two routes, 5 and 10 kilometres, through sections of historic downtown and residential streets. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. Participants are registering daily, using the Super Cities Walk brochures found at various locations across town. Registrations will also be taken before the start of the walk. The Oakville walk is one of 31 Super Cities Walks being organized. "We are working very hard again to ensure its success toward a projected goal of $126,000," says Theresa TonerBurke, volunteer co-ordinator. Honorary chairs will be M ayor Ann Mulvale, and Robert Decker of Oakville, top provincial fundraiser. The Halton chapter is look ing for volunteers to work two to three hours, mornings or afternoons, on April 21 and 22, to help with registration, break fast, checkpoints, route patrol, and barbecue. COARE Enterprises will donate $100 to Disability Information and Services (DIAS), if it can find three people to try the Excel Long Distance services by March 31. DIAS is a grassroots organization with a mission is to ensure the provision o f choices for independence and access to informa tion and services for persons with disabilities residing in Halton and Peel. Tens o f thousands o f Jews will gather in synagogues to eat, drink, relax, dance, enjoy, debate and celebrate Shabbat Across Canada, a historic national event unifying all Jews. Nominations sought for Women of the Year The call for nominations is under way for Halton's fourth annual Women of the Year Awards to be presented by the Women's Information and Support Centre of Halton - better known as the Women's Centre. The awards will be presented at a reception and ceremony on Tuesday May 1, at the Glen Abbey Golf Club. The awards honour the many women in Halton whose exemplary services to others raise the bar on leadership, responsiveness, action, perseverance and social awareness. They are neigh bours, relatives and colleagues -- women who exemplify integrity and determination. This year's keynote speaker will be Linda Lundstrom, a leading Canadian fashion designer and businesswoman. Those interested in nominating an individual are asked to describe their candidate - who must live in Halton -- by citing her leadership abilities; chal lenges she has met and obstacles she has overcome; how she has made a dif ference and demonstrated her strength. A personal profile sheet should also accompany the form. Nominations must be received by the Women's Centre by Thursday, April 5th.
