The tradition, which is entering its 21st year, will see the funeral home place flags by the graves of more than 200 veterans at cemeteries across Oakville. Funeral Home Manager Steven Reynolds said the flags are put out on June 30 so they can be there for July 1. The flags are removed on July 2. "The flags are there for Canada Day to honour their sacrifice," said Reynolds. "It is like the motto `Lest we forget.' It is not an option, not to do it again." He said years ago, the funeral home put out a request for family members of deceased veterans in Oakville to contact Oakview Funeral Home if they would like their loved ones' graves recognized with a Canadian flag for Canada Day. Over time the list of veterans has grown. Reynolds said family members of veterans buried outside of Oakville can also come by the funeral home, pick up a flag, and take it to those graves.
