Bronte Horticultural Society 25th Annual Flower Show, Hopedale Presbyterian Church Hall

OAKVILLE - Gorgeous flowers of late summer attracted garden enthusiasts to Hopedale Presbyterian Church hall Saturday evening when the Bronte Horticultural Society held the second part of its 25th annual show. A total of 143 entries were received from 18 exhibitors.

Gladioli, chrysanthemums, roses, petunias, asters, verbena, dahlias, and other varieties delighted the visitors with their color and their freshness. Among the outstanding exhibits was a bowl of petunias exhibited by Mrs. L. Hewett.

The Cansfield Shield for the highest total of points was won by Mrs. D.G. Dennison. Mrs. E. Partington captured the Morgan trophy for the best exhibit in the show. The Scott trophy for the best arrangement went to Mrs. Dennison. Mrs. E. Perkins and Mrs. R.G. Thexton were tied for Mrs. L. Woolford's prize for the highest total points by new members. Mrs. C. Warner's prize for best exhibit in section was awarded to Mrs. Hewett.

Other awards were as follows: Society's prize for highest total points, flower of year, Mrs. N. Marsh; children's prizes, Linda Perkins, Gerald Measures, Bob Thexton; Eaton's donation (silver cup), C. Warner; Redleaf Nurseries (redwood tree) Mrs. B. Giles; Horticultural Magazine subscription, Mrs. D.G. Dennison; Nielsen's gift certificate, Mrs. Alvin Bumby; Society's prize, bulb and soil dust, Mrs. Erwin Gunby; Society's prize, pale green vase, Mrs. B. Giles; Society's prize, gardening book, Mrs. C. Dennison; Society's prize bulb and soil dust; Sorensen's Nursery, $10, Mr. E. Partington; Mrs. B. Giles' prize, two jumpers, Mrs. E. Dennison; Society's prize, pair of candlesticks, Mrs. R.G. Thexton; Society's prize, bulb and soil dust and plant food, men only class, C. Warner.

Judge of the show was Miss Ada Linton of Toronto, a director of the Ontario Horticultural Association. Mrs. R.E. Measures was convener. Mrs. L.O. Woolford, vice-president of the Bronte Horticultural Society, returned from a visit to Holland just in time to be present for the show.

Mrs. Measures said that the number and quality of the exhibits were very good in view of the fact that the season had been a poor one for flowers, on account of the cool weather and insects. The first part of this year's show, which marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the society, was held in June. The anniversary theme was ingeniously carried out in the floral arrangements. The Cansfield Shield for the highest number of points, won by Mrs. D.G. Dennison, will be presented at the society's regular September show.
