Early on a Thursday morning the campers left for their seven day adventure. They started the canoe trip at Portage Store and headed down Canoe Lake. The camp for the first night proved to be a battle with the mosquitoes and black flies. One lesson learned about camping was to string your food up in a tree. Vera Chomacki learned the hard way when she had her food stolen by a racoon. Steve Auld and Dave Dingle had their camp site visited by a bear but no damage was done. Friday proved to be a tough day as the travellers tackled the longest portage of the trip, a winding, hilly trail extending nearly a mile and a half. Youth centre There were two portages separated by a long lake before Misty Lake was reached. The next day was used for drying out and fishing. On the Monday they encountered rapids on the Petawawa River. The trip was nearly 60 miles long with three and a half miles of portage. opens The Colborne Youth Centre officially began operations last week. The first three days consisted of organizing and talking to the youth in the community. A pop machine was installed and shuffle board is now being painted on the floor. Questionaires were handed out and asked to be brought back to a meeting on Thursday night. They asked how many youths between the ages of 13 and 19 were interested. A sock hop will be held at the Youth Centre on Thursday, June 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m. King St. W.
