Hosted by the Oakville Historical Society, the free event will be held from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Lakeside Park, Navy and Front streets. Participants are invited to bring a picnic lunch and lawn chairs and enjoy entertainment from the Oakville Wind Orchestra, St. Paul's Dixie Land Band and the Scottish Country Dancers. In addition to capturing top honours, the four-part, a cappella, barber-shop style chorus placed second overall. Competing against 18 other choruses in Syracuse, N.Y., the local group took home the first-place medal in the mid-size category, which is for choirs with 31-60 singers on stage. Not only did the four-part, a cappella, barbershop-style chorus take first in its division, but it also placed second overall -- Circle of Harmony's best standings to date, according to the group. "First in our region and second overall is thrilling and one step closer to the international stage," said master director Barbara Hodge. Competing in the quartet competition was Circle of Harmony's YES! Quartet, which placed 10th amongst 17 other foursomes. In addition, the group won the novice quartet award, which is given to the highestscoring, first-time competing quartet. Barbara Hodge The Halton Jazz Singers are joining forces with the Mississauga Swing Band for a free concert Sunday (June 7) in downtown Oakville. Starting at 1 p.m. in George's Square, Trafalgar Road and Dunn Street, the Halton Jazz Singers will be the guest vocal group for the Mississauga Swing Band, led by director Ron Schriber. "Come, bring your suntan lotion, sun- glasses, chair and cool refreshments, and relax and enjoy the free jazz vocals from Lorinel Penarubia, Jason Miller, George Smith and Halton Jazz Singers' founder and music director Darcea Hiltz," stated a media release. Circle of Harmony master director Circle of Harmony performs several times throughout the year in Oakville and the surrounding area. Its Christmas show is already scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 28.
