continued from p.6 Since Emily was diagnosed, she and her family have also taken part in the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes for Peel/Halton Region where, for the last four years, Emma attends as the No More Diabetes Fairy -- carrying on the superhero theme from a previous walk. "The first fundraising goal we set was based on her age -- $2,000," said Chris. "We've upped it every year, but it's getting harder as she gets older, so this year we're setting the overall goal from all our walks to $50,000." This year's walk is on June 14 in Streetsville (Mississauga) and donations can be made at Finding a cure for T1D is a family affair for Emma http://goo.gl/OYjBgs. It is money raised at the annual Oakville gala and charity walks that helps the JDRF and its partnership with the Canadian Clinical Trial Network further the research into T1D to eventually find a cure. Because of that research, a functioning artificial pancreas has now reached the human trail stage, a fact that "just speaks volumes to the progress," noted Chris. Another advance in the T1D treatment technologies is the theory of encapsulation where researchers take functioning beta cells that create insulin, place them in "tea bags" and insert it into a person with T1D. That treatment is also in human trials and initial results have people showing signs of not being diabetic. "Human trials is typically the last stage before something is made available to the public," said Chris. "So, I have no doubt, if I look at the progress in the eight and a half years we've been involved with them (JDRF), there will be a cure in (Emma's) lifetime. And that is going to be one good party." Emma agrees, saying a cure to see "type 1 turn into type none" is all she wants -- so much so, she rewrote the lyrics to Frozen's Let it Go into a 7 | Thursday, June 4, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com song titled I Want A Cure. She said she decided to rewrite the popular song as a way to spread awareness of T1D and to give a sense of what life with the disease is like. Her favourite rewritten lyrics include: "I want a cure, I want a cure, can't wait for it anymore," and "It's time to see what scientists can do, to test the limits and break through. No pokes, no needles, no insulin pumps for me. I'd be free." In the meantime, Emma has this advice for any child diagnosed with T1D: "You can still do anything a normal kid can do."
