The Step Up Program originally began at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) in 1996 to help rehabilitate stroke patients and patients with neurological conditions. In 2014, this outpatient rehab program was enhanced and expanded to include frail elderly patients who are deconditioned due to multiple medical conditions and/ or an injury, usually related to a fall. It is designed to help seniors regain their physical strength and function so they can return home from hospital more quickly and live safely and independently. "We are honoured to receive this funding, which not only recognizes Halton Healthcare's excellence in geriatric care but also enables us to continue to provide our frail elderly patients with critical restorative ambulatory programs and support them with a more seamless continuum of care as they transition home from the hhospital," said Denise Hardenne, President and CEO, Halton Healthcare Services. Green design reduces environmental impact The New Oakville Hospital's mission is not only to provide patient-centred care, but also to be dedicated to environmental excellence for the nearby community and beyond. This is why the new facility features `green' design and solar power to reduce its impact on the environment and provide staff, patients and visitors the opportunity to experience the outdoors as part of the healing process. "Based on input we received from the community, we wanted to create a facility that balances the efficient use of resources with the best care for our patients," said Bill Bailey, Vice President of Redevelopment at HHS. "In an effort to provide a positive patient experience and be a good citizen, we're focused on maximizing our ability to create a green building for the community." This commitment started from the ground up. The hospital is built on greenfield, which means there was nothing previously on the property that could negatively affect the land. And builder, Ellis Don, is employing construction practices that use resources efficiently, including recycling and reduction of waste. When complete, Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) will undergo a robust Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Canada certification process to seek a Silver LEED® rating, the highest standard to be achieved by a hospital in Ontario. To achieve this rating, the hospital is targeting 36 LEED® credits such as: balancing water quality and quantity demands, reducing energy consumption, using renewable energy sources when possible and using sustainable materials to enhance the environmental health of the building. Examples of environmental features inside the building include operable windows in longer-stay inpatient rooms, and programmable lighting systems with dimming and occupancy sensors. Outside features include planting drought-tolerant native trees and shrubs to increase water efficiency as well as heat reducing islands across the parking lots and throughout the site. There are also three on-site public transit stops to reduce car emissions, bicycle parking and car charging stations to accommodate electric vehicles. The combined pedestrian and cycle routes that loop throughout the grounds can be used as both a leisure and therapeutic tool. The hospital is even helping the province create and use renewable energy with the help of local company, Hatch, which is building and donating a 500 KW photovoltaic solar array power system that will be located on the parking garage roof top. Power that is generated and sold through the rooftop solar array will help provide revenues of $5 million to the hospital over a 20-year period through the Ontario Power Authority's Feed In-Tariff (FIT) program.
