Beaver wins OCNA for Best Front Page The Oakville Beaver won first place for Best Front Page in the Ontario Community Newspaper Association (OCNA) Better Newspapers Competition (BNC) Friday (May 22). Winners were announced at a gala held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel. The award-winning entry was for the Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 front page. It featured a photo of a Canadian flag with a Lancaster bomber as it did a fly past during Remembrance Day services at the Oakville Cenotaph. The feature photo was taken by veteran photographer Riziero Vertolli, who heads up photography for Metroland West Media, Halton Division. John Bkila, Oakville Beaver sub-editor, wrote an accompanying story. The winning entry also contained a story about seniors fighting the elimination of discounts for recreation and memberships by Town Council. Other page elements included a photozone photo displaying a table of poppies serving as a teaser for a photo feature of Remembrance Day at Garth Webb Secondary School. A box at the top of the page drew readers to Bronte Legion's Remembrance Day ceremony and featured a photo of union officials saluting as rain fell. "A clean, snappy look that covers all the bases. Very cool photo, played very big, which is great to see. Very well done," said judge Glenn Mitchell, managing editor of The Morning Star in Vernon, BC, a former director of the B.C. Press Council.
