H. O. Hanna, Gore's Landing who delivered a very interesting and instructive sermon, choosing as his text "The Boundless Love of God." A ladies trio. Mrs. J. B. Barnes Mrs. Frank Martin and Miss Beverley Hubble gave two selec tions "After" and "Jesus Master of my Sou!" accompanied by Mrs J. F. Haynes which were enjov-ed by all. The choir selection "Christ is my Pilot" with Mrs. Wallace On-yon, choir leader at the piano, was beautifully rendered. There was a large congregation present and the beautiful spiritual service was a blessing to all. COLBORNE CENTENNIAL June 28, 29, 30, July 1, 1959 Among the many things neces sary to ensure the success of our Centennial celebrations next year, perhaps one of the most requirements is enthusiasm. This enthusiasm is showing itself in the village, and as additional members of the community take on responsibilties for the planning of the many activities concerned, enthusiasm is increasing. We need your enthusiasm and active support. During the past week another committee has been formed. Mr. Reg. Pacey has accepted the offices of Treasurer and chairman of the Finance Committee. NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY The monthlv meeting of the Northumberland County Historical Society was held in the Cqnt munity Hall. Harwood. on Thurs dav evening. October 30, with President R. D. P. Davidson in the .chair. The Harwood Women's Institute had prepared an interesting program consisting of tap dancing by Patricia Cotter,' Shirley j and Carmen Burrison, a paper on the early history of Harwood bv Mrs. A. Crick; and an amusing skit entitled M898 calls on 1958" bv Mrs. Gordon Buttars. Mrs. Clifford Timlin. Miss Helen Reynar gave a brief report on,, the weekem'fc/ October 3-5 spent by Miss EtuW Rogers of Col borne and herself attending the Museum Work Shop of the Ontario Historical Societv in Brantford. Papers of many phases of museum work were given. The highlights of the session were the dinner at the Hotel Kerby on Saturday evening, with a' brilliant journalist. Kingsley Brown of Hamilton, as guest speaker, and the Sunday morning service at St. Pauls' Her Majesty's Chapel of the Mohawks--the only Royal Chapel in the world outside of the United Kingdom. Before entering the chapel, the conference members visited the graveyard outside to see the tomb of Joseph Brant and a memorial stone to Pauline John ston who is buried in Vancouvejr The choir of Indian girls wort scarlet gowns and caps, with white surplices. A large group of Indian girls from the Reserve-school were present, wearing roy al blue uniforms. At the close of the service th> rector called on Mrs. Monture tj) come to the front of the chape}. Best became Supervisor of Veterinary Inspection replacing Dr. C. Carlson who has transferred to poultry pathology at the Veterinary Laboratory. i His main work will entail supervising the inspection of live stock sold at the Class D. Stockyards (Livestock Auction Markets). This is one of the major activities of the Veterinary Services Branch. ■ Dr. Best is a former well known resident of Colborne and his many friends here wish him every success in his new posi- AT THE LEGION CENTRE Remembrance day has been set up as a holiday with a difference. AM across Canada groups will gather at Cenotaphs and monuments to place wreaths of Remembrance and pause to reflect. In oast years in Colborne the attendance at this ceremony has been large. This adds great-lv to the solemnity and dignity of the occasion. Why. then should any veteran be absent? This is •in nvmeal to all veterans to meet at the Legion Centre at 10.30 on Tuesday. 11th of November and to march in the parade to the park. It is a Poppy Fund rule that payments to distressed veterans are secret, known only to the Poppy fund chairman and the recipient. But in a general way the treasurer reports the following monev disbursements during the past year. Christmas baskets $30 Crippled Children $20. meals and accomodation for transient veterans $72.00: aid to local veterans and dependents $85.00 and for wreaths for deceased veterans $35.00. The recent disaster at the Springhill Nova Scotia mines has aroused the sympathv of all. The Poppy Fund "chairman has decid ed that in this great emergency, no better use could be found for this monev. With the approval of the executive, we are sending to the Springhill Legion Branch a donation which will all but deplete our fund. Your generosity on Poppy Day Saturday, November 8 will help us to build up our fund so we ■ can look after our heavy committ j ments for the coming year.
