4 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, November 24, 2010 TURBINE Continued from pg 2 While the production of green energy is commendable, there currently is no plan for the effective utilization of it. Wind turbines only produce electricity when the wind blows and because the wind is intermittent they have no capacity to supply electricity on a constant basis. They require back up by supplemental sources for times when there is no wind. For every megawatt of wind power produced, a supplemental source of reliable backup power is required. For this reason, there is no significant reduction in green house gases (CO2). Germany and Denmark are often referred to as examples of leaders in wind turbines; however, experts in both these countries have been quoted as saying that they have been unable to close any coal-fired plants nor have they reduced CO2 emissions by a single gram. To all residents of Orono, Kendal, Newtonville, Newcastle, Leskard, and surrounding area, I warn you that our whole community will be affected. Once the first wind turbines are installed, the remainder of the area will be targeted for additional wind turbines. Your support is needed in requesting a moratorium on the installation of industrial wind turbines until proper health studies can be carried out and a sustainable energy policy can be developed. Clarington Wind Concerns is working on your behalf and needs your support. Additional information on the effects of industrial wind turbines can be found on the WIND CONCERNS ONTARIO web site: www.windconcernsontario.wordpress.com.
