12 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, October 20, 2010 A letter to the residents of Ward 4 from Dean Perrin Dear Ward 4 Residents, I have lived here in Ward 4, with you, for over 9 years. This community is filled with people of passion, hard workers, people that truly care about the community. We are about to elect people to represent us over the next four years, and we should be making our decisions based on factual information, trust and common sense. This is after all our future. Recently, a candidate question period was held so the residents could have the opportunity to hear what candidates views were on specific issues. Many of you were unable to attend so I am forwarding this letter with my responses including more detail on some of these important questions. Additional questions and answers are located on my website. Question regarding the new Fire hall and fire plan: After several discussions with many of the dedicated volunteers that currently man the existing Newcastle station, it is apparent that at this point in time it is in the best interest of public safety that we continue to use the current location. The fact that the majority of the Firefighters live in the east end of town and would be forced to respond to the farthest west end of town to arrive at the proposed new location, supports this. This could change in the future, based on how the new station would be manned. Question regarding candidate preparation for being a Local Councillor: I have spoken at length, with many of the current Councillors to get a firmer grasp of the duties and responsibilities of the position. I have also talked with some Municipal staff at the union and non union level. In addition I have talked with many Community Leaders to hear additional concerns and ideas. Perhaps more importantly, during my journey across Ward 4, I have personally knocked on thousands of doors and have talked with many residents. My experience teaching business owners will be an additional asset in this position. Question regarding sidewalks blocked by cars: A tag system could be established so that families with children that have vehicles can have a permit to park on the street overnight. The blocking of sidewalks is a safety concern for children and seniors so we do need by-law officers involved, although a more effective and cost efficient solution needs to be found. Question regarding escalating public sector wages and benefits: Before any decisions are made, first and foremost we must have open negotiations. The people have spoken and clearly do not want increased taxes. A successful business would look at bringing in outside services if a review of the options warranted it (this could only be considered if the needs of the community were met and the option was cost effective). First, open and honest negotiations must take place. Question regarding one major focus as a Councillor: Without question, this would be improved economic development. This will create local jobs, help residents with tax burdens and create additional funds for other services. Please look at my website deanperrinforcouncillor.ca or contact me for more information. Information is available to all of us to help us make an informed decision. Please remember to vote on October 25th. Sincerely, Dean Perrin
