6 - Orono Weekly Times Wednesday, January 27, 2010 LOCAL SPORTS Atom reps advance to next round by Janine deBoer The Lawrcon Atom rep team has advanced to the next round of the OMHA playdowns after defeating a tough North Frontenac team 4-3 in the series-deciding game. Aided defensively by Gus Qualtrough, Zack deBoer and Justin Theberge, Gibson Hegan was once again solid in net, making many spectacular saves. The Orono team opened the scoring on one of Zack Lagace's two goals. The North Frontenac team kept fighting back, matching Orono goal for goal until the end when, with just over a minute to go, Ian King made a great pass to Nathan Hutchison who buried it behind the opponent's goalie. The other goal was score by Tyler Morton with assists to Hutchison, Daniel Phillippe, Ian King and Lagace. Seth Hampson and Devon Dennis were instrumentally in keeping the puck in the opposite end. Orono is now awaiting the winner of the Ennismore and Campbellford series. Good luck boys. Orono played strong both offensively and defensively, dominating their opponents. Both Josh Hill and Kevin Gough were alert when tested, letting only 2 in for Newcastle. Orono's defense played aggressively with accurate, hard passing, and clearing shots to shut down Newcastle's offensive attempts. Orono's offense took charge by working hard, passing, digging and staying on their men. The reward: numerous shots on net and a 7-2 victory. Goals came from Jonathan Feddema, Matthew Caudle, Lucas Iantomasi and Ethan Lock. Nice wrap around goal Ethan. On January 23, Orono faced Clarington #3 -- a team known for its scoring -- in a battle for third place. Orono had to play smart to keep this team in check. Iantomasi set the tone early in the first with a goal, with assists from Lock and Cassy Dolley. Jonathan scored the next two, assisted by Evan Vey, John Sims and Caudle, to make it 3-0. Gough kept Orono in the game with outstanding saves, including a stop on a breakaway attempt. Clarington slipped one by to get on the scoreboard, but Feddema responded with an unassisted goal. After Clarington scored once more, Brett McCormick completed Orono's scoring with a solid backhand shot to make it a 52 final. The team was honoured to be congratulated on its passing game by another coach. Good work team and keep it up when you face this team again on Thursday.
