Wednesday, January 6, 2010 Orono Weekly Times - 9 Birds of a Feather Birding by Markus Lise Durham Region hosts evening workshop for parents WHITBY, ON - The Regional Municipality of Durham, Social Services Department will be hosting a two-hour evening learning workshop"Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse"-to provide parents with information and techniques to keep their children safe from sexual abuse. This workshop is presented by the Family Services Division. WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. WHERE: The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters, 605 Rossland Rd. E., Whitby WHY: This workshop series is aimed at parents with children of any age. It is intended to help parents recognize the signs of sexual abuse. The workshop also teaches parents what information to pass on to their children, safety techniques, what to do if abuse is suspected and how to raise sexually respectful children. NOTE: A fee is required for participants: $20 per person and $35 per couple. Childcare will not be available. CBC Over 80 Species of Birds in Oshawa area! CBC is coming to a close for most communities. The Christmas Bird Count is what CBC stands for. In centers all over the USA and Canada ordinary citizens of people like you and I have been counting birds. One particular day close to Christmas Day has been singled out by different places. Everyone participating has to get up before sunrise and end the day after sundown. We are considered as part of Oshawa area. The count was well over 80 species and into the thousands of bird's altogether. The next bird count for our areas throughout the USA and Canada is 4 day period from February 12 -15. This year it will be the 13th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count i.e. GBBC. Discover and help the birds in your community. It's fun, family-friendly, and educational, free and open to all ages and skill levels. Chicken and Vegetable Bake with Maple Mustard Glaze Here is warming comfort food at its best with economical Ontario winter vegetables. It's easy to toss together and it all bakes in one pan. Parsnips cook faster than carrots, so cut the parsnips in larger pieces than the carrots. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 1 hour Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 lb (1 kg) Ontario Chicken Thighs (about 8) 2 medium Ontario Potatoes, scrubbed and cut into wedges 2 medium Ontario Carrots, cut into chunks 2 medium Ontario Parsnips, cut into chunks 2 tbsp (25 mL) olive or vegetable oil 1 tsp (5 mL) dried thyme leaves Pinch crumbled dried rosemary leaves Pinch each salt and pepper 2 tbsp (25 mL) Ontario Maple Syrup 1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard Preparation Instructions: Remove skin and any excess fat from chicken thighs. Line large roasting pan with parchment paper or lightly oiled foil. In large bowl, combine chicken, potatoes, carrots and parsnips. In small dish, combine oil, thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper; pour over chicken and vegetables, tossing to coat evenly. Arrange in single layer in prepared pan. Bake in 350°F (180°C) oven for 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are almost tender and juices run clear when chicken is pierced. Stir maple syrup with mustard; drizzle over chicken mixture and bake for 10 to 15 minutes to glaze.
