Orono Weekly T4es Otbr Armstrong IGA strong-arms Beaverton The Armstrong IGA midget rep team was simply too over- powering for their Beaverton counterparts as their 6-2 score indicates. But the the fact of the matter is--if the opposition wants to take penalties, chances are, they're going to pay for them as four of IGA's six goals were scored on the power-play. But, it's only fair to mention that both Beaverton goals were also on the power- play. Strong performances were given by defensemen Paul Landers responsible for two goals, Greg Bester and Craig Harness who made his pres- ence known by delivering three solid, crushing bodychecks while centreman, Ryan Tresise was instrumental in Orono's maintaining possession of the puck by winning faceoffs throughout the game. Orono goal scorers were: Landers (2), Jamie Parry, Greg Shetler, Andrew Beacock, and Jeff Lee. Playmakers- earning assists on the night wère: Ryan Holmes, Jeff Lee and Bob Witheridge. Chris Kay was the winning goalie but was forced to leave the game in the second period with a neck injury. Shots on goal: Orono 33r, Beaverton 23.-Penalty minutes: Orono 18, Beaverton 15. This was a very exciting game as both teams were evenly matched. Orono drew first blood when Derek Heerschop scored from Mark McCallister. The 1-0 lead held until late in the third when Lambeth evened the score on the power-play. Orono fought back peppering the goalie with shots--with eight seconds remaining in the game, Matt Reid scored from Ricky Howe and Heerschop to seal the win advancing Orono to the 'A' final against St. Paul's. The championship final saw the Family Auto bantams play sound defense complete with top-notch goaltending from both Slemon and Burritt who combined to share in the 5-0 championship shut-out. Game time is 9:00 p.m. Adam Colville of Orono, who is one of Canada's bright- est young junior skating stars, is having the time of his life. Having recently returned from an International Skating Union competition in Budapest, Hungary early last week, Adam skated to a ninth place finish overall out of a field of twenty competitors representing fourteen coun- tries--and the best junior skaters in the world. Even more exciting was his placing fifth in the short pro- gram--skating absolutely flaw- lessly while eaming a berth in the top flight entering the free skate portion of the competi- tion. When asked how he felt after warming-up in the top flight, he answered confident- ly, thatjump-for-jump he skat- ed with them--and he belonged there. Adam was very pleased with his performances espe- cially while under such tremendous pressure to do well. He was quick to add that he is working hard to improve on his ninth place finish--and he knows he can because, only the narrowest of margins sepa- rated the fourth to tenth place finishes. The top three skaters- -Ilia Klimkin of Russia, Josukc Takeuchi of Japan and Ryan Bradley of U.S.A. all landed their triple axels cleanly with- out deductions which is some- thing he also is capable of. Adam's time in Budapest wasn't all spent at the arena as he and others in the Canadian contingent made their way downtown every day while taking in some of the sights. He commented on the historic beauty of the city. There are no more interna- tional competitions for Adam this year as he prepares for sec- tionals in November, followed by divisionals in December then, Canadians in January. When asked if he knew when he'd be making the jump to senior competition, Adam replied possibly, it could be as early as next year! Penalty shot for Russ Major Plumbing The Russ Major Plumbing Novice Rep team began their season with a 1-2-1 record. The young novice leafs split a point with host team Fenelon Falls in a 2-ail draw; played a hard-fought battle against Ops losing 4-2; lost to a very aggressive Minden team that can be viewed as a learning experience; then finally picked up a couple of points when they entertained a fast-moving team from Cannington last Armstrong Friday night. Tommy Meester scored first on a pass from Michael Hicks followed by a goal from Dennis Beenen from Hicks again. In the third period, Michael Hicks struck again- this with a goal of his own with Beenen getting the helper. The end of the period featured a penalty shot as the result of a Cannington player closing his glove on the puck in the crease. It was one-on-one when Orono's-Lucas Leech let a beautiful shot sail over the goalie's shoulder giving the plumbers a 4-2 victory. Kyle Balson, Andrew Kirkbride, Michael Whelan and Matt Fuller headed up the Leafs defensive corp while net minding duties have fallen to first-year novice Alexander Campney. You'll also find on the team the likes of Joey Van Dusen, Brett Cairns, Jesse Rice, and Daniel Maclsaac. Accessible Design atoms IGA peewees mD' finalists n learn hard lesson The PeeWee House League Team sponsored by Armstrong's IGA were stopped in their tracks last Saturday trying to make a valiant comeback against a Bowmanville team. The team consisting of first and second year players are gradual- ly adjusting to body contact. The 7-0 loss came as a hard les- son learned. The Pee Wees made a corne- back on Sunday playing an exhibition game against Newcastle. They fought their way to a 6-5 win. Way to go boys Adam and coach Ann Wilson discuss technicalities at Sunday's practice. Newcastle tournament The Orono Accessible Design atom were guests of Newcastle in exhibition play October 23rd but, the Newcastle team weren't very nice hosts handing Orono a 5-1 loss. Michael Fuller was the lone goal scorer for the Leafs unassisted. As goaltender Shane Winters was battling flu symptoms, Andrew Fudge stepped forward taking on net- minding duties--facing a lot of rubber! Weekend tournament action in Newcastle, saw Orono come from behind to tie Millbrook 4- all with David Landman and Steven Burt scoring two apiece. Ryan Campney and Daniel Reilly earned assists.
