4- Orono Weekiylbnes, Wedne~lay, Janua~y 14, 1998 Canadian National Figure Skating Championships Katie & Adam 'top 10' finish in novice pairs Adam makes 'Junior National Team' Novice pairs skaters Kaiti and Adam Colville, son of Brian and Ruthe Colville of Orono opened a few eyes at their national figure skating debut in H-am ilton last week. Thirteenth after the short programi--they moved up 4 positions to 9th despite having drawn the first skate amnong 16 skaters in the long program. Their father said they weren't particularly nervous. They skated beautifually, with confidence and weren't intimi- dated by the standing-roomi onfly crowd of over 16,000 at Chedokee Arena last T'hurs- day. Kaiti said in a telephone interview "they were very pleased with their flawless long program; they are very tired but entirely thrilled with their first national comnpeti- tion." She added that they had accomplished ail that they set out to--have fun, skate weil and make an impression on the judges!" Regular training will resume as the couple prepares to begin work on their 'junior competitive' this sumrmer. Adam earns berth on National Junior Team Just one hour after skating the junior men's short program at Copps Colosseumi, Adamn Colville with transport wait- ing, made a mad dash to Chedokee Arena just in timie to performn the pair's free skate with sister Kaiti! Having placed third after an excellent short program, Adam skated sixteenth out of seventeen skaters (a much bet- ter draw this time.) He wowwed a very good crowd with his long programn skating to a fifth-place finish behind: lst - Hlugh Yik - New Brunswick (Mariposa); 2nd - Jeffrey Buttie- Ontario (Mariposa); 3rd- Carl Des- Rosiers - Quebec; and 4th - Blair Smith - Western Ontario. These top f'ive finishers have ail earned a spot on Canada's National Junior Team. Adam's first national assignment was gïven to him Saturday evening at miidnight. He's off to the "'Triglav Cup' competit ion, April 6 to 12 in Je senice, Slovenia formerly the Yugoslavia Republic (in the Swiss Alps at the Austrian border.) Twenty-five countries will be participating in this international comipetition. Between now and April 6th, Adamn will begin high alti- tude training and fine-tune his programn. Adam, Katie and their famn- ily extend a sincere, heartfelt thanks to the comnmunity of Orono for their unwavering support and for the many con- gratulatory telephone calîs. The game got off to a slow start but picked up momentum with each period. The third period had everyone sitîing on the edge their seats! This was an excit- ing game. Orono clearly outshot the 'plumbers' in the firsî. However, stellar netm ind ing foe.r Bowmianville kept the Orono 'builders' at ba.y. It was with a fluirry of action in a wild scram- ble that Orono's Scott Wood Dufferin Aggregates play top defensive game The Minor Tfykes are on the top of their gamne, playing defense. Orono allowed a meager three goals against in two games. The first gaine, Jan. 9, was an exhibition game with Newcastle. Orono went down 2-1 with a great effort. Garrett Klompmaker dashed in from lis zone to score for Orono. Assists went to Scot Duquette and Tyler Armstrong. On Jan. 10, Orono played Bowmanville 1. ThIs was Orono's game but they couldn't beat the goalie. We saw some exciting break- continued on page 5 picked up the pu-ck fromn Scott Webb poking il through a hole into the net giving Orono a 1-0 lead. Ashley Getz, Orono's goaltender made a terrific glove save with five minutes remfain- ing in the opening framne. Bowmianville was outshot again in the second period but they mnanaged to score not one but two short-handed goals pulling- ahead 2-1. Orono had several opportunilies to score but the Bowmanville goal- tender had other ideas. The Ihird period was fast and furious. Yet again the 'builders' outshoî the 'plumbers'. And, once again Bowmanville scored another short-handed goal extending their lead 3-1. Orono continued to play hard and fast, Their efforts were rewarded whien Adam Rypstra put one upstairs with two minutes lefI to play in the gamne narrowed the gap 10 one. iMark Brennan and Dan Tresise both earned assists on the Rypstra goal. Orono pulled their goalie for an extra attacker but the buzzer souinded and the spoils wenî to Bowm-anville 3-2, What a gamne! Pine Ridge Insurance Novices give winning effort in 4-3 Ioss The Pine Ridge însurance novice house league teamn faced-off against Iheir National Trust counîerparts in Bowman- ville last Saturday in what was a great team eflfort but ending in a 4-3 loss. The 'bankers' opened the scoring first but Orono soon lied il up with some fancy puck handing by Brien Konopka. The second period ended with four goals being scored. Bowmnanville netted two taking the Iead 3-1. Pine Ridge nol to be outdone responded with two goals of their own. Brien Konopka scored his second of the game followed by a nice goal by Kenny Jackson assisted by Jacob Stockwell and Jonathan Koerssen. Bowmanville notched the winning goal in the third taking the game 4-3. Coachi Steve Lawrence said the whole teamn played a great game! Accessible Design Atoms break 3 game losing streak The Orono O.M.H.A. Accessible Design Atoms had a busy time ending up on the down side in three of four games played last week. It started off with 7-0 blowout in Minden on January 3rd. Orono simply didn't show up for this gamne. Chopped down by Woodville January 6 the 'Designers' travelled north to Woodville. This gamne was a penalty-filled affair as both teamis stacked up 34 penalty minutes between them.È Orono drew first blood at 3:48 in the opening period as Doug Garlick and Chris Moffat set up Greg Dunham for the first goal. Orono made it 2-0 at 9:12 of the second as Mike Fuller sent one home. Assists going to Brian Pisani and Kyle Allin. Woodville then took over, scoring three in a row-- once 'In the second and twice in the third. The winning goal comning in with 4 seconds left in the gamne. Orono lost a tough one 3-2, their second in as mnany gamies. Designers take it on the chin against Millbrook The following night-- January 7th Orono continued league play with an away game versus Millbrook. Orono was ready to play and came out fly- Ïing. But, Millbrook soon cooled them off with a goal late in the first and another late in the second. Orono finally got one back at 2:24 of the third as Doug Garlick scored on a Chris Moffat offering. The Accessible Design atomns couldn't sneak another one past the Millbrook goalie and lost 3-1 as Millbro.ok added an emrpty-netter. Designers break losing streak with a 3-0 shutout Orono's last game of the week finished up January 9. Finally--a game at home. This timne against Port Perry. They wanted a win badly afier suffering three straight losses. Goaltending was a key factor for Orono this night as Jamie Whitehead and Carl *Tard if both played outstanding in their portions of the gamne. Orono opened the scoring late in the first period as Kyle Allin scored with twenty-eight seconds Ieft fromi Steve Burt and Mike Fuller. Eleven sec- onds later Paul Richter scored assisted by Chris Moffat. Orono kept Port Perry off the score board with fine defensive play. Orono sealed the win aI 1:25 of the second period as Kyle Cox put Kyle Allin's big rebounid in the top shelf. Orono's goalies didn't allow a goal as Orono prevailed 3-0 finally ending their three-gamne losing streak with a win at home. Russ Major Pl umbing Novice 'A" champ finalists Orono's OMHA novices started the weekend off with an exh-ibitîi gamne with the Oshawa Blacek Hawks, Orono was the winner at 4-3. The first goal was scored by Daniel Macîssac assisted by Flynn and Fothergili. Goal No. 2 was scored by Matt Bester assisted by Young and Deboo. No. 3 was scored by Adam Wood from Delorme. No. 4 was scored by Andrew Fothergili from Flynn and Knox. This gamne proved to be a good warmup for the Saturday morning tourna- ment in Apsley. Orono played great in Apsley, advancing to the 'A' championship. Orono won the first game 14-1. Goal scorers were Wood, Moffat,, MacIssac, Knox, Young (2), Fothergill, Deboo, Reilly, Beenen. Mitchell, Bester. Ernst and Donnelly (her flrst of the season). Congratulations Sarah! Assists went to Knox, Delorme, Flynn. Youing (4), Wood (3), Bester (2), Deboo (2), Mitchell, Maclssac (2), Moffat, Fothergill. Game 2 - Orono 5, Bobcaygeon L. Orono's goals came from Bester, Maclssac (2) and Fothergill (2). Assists went to Deboo, Fothergill, Flynn, Maclssac and Mitchell (3) . This great effort advanced them to the 'A' final against Omemee. This gaine proved to be the wildest gaine of the year. The winner was decid- ecl in a shoot-out. Orono had the lead twice in the game and Omemee battled back to a 3-3 tie. Orono goals were scored by Fothergill, Young and Wood. Omemee won the shoot-out and received the trophy. Shane Winters was outstanding in goal and received the MVP award for his efforts. Fothergill and Knox received MIVP awards for thieir efforts in the tourna- ment. Congratulations teain! Next league game is in Newcastle vs Orono at 7 p.m.
