O'Toole announced on January 7, 1998 on behaîf of Health Minister Elizabeth Witmer that Bow-rnanvllle MemorIal Hospital wfll receive $ 160,300 and North Durhamn Health Services wlll receive $2 15,400 to cover the cost of reforming their operations. The funding is part of a province-wide announcement of $154,2 rmil- lion for 190 hospitals in Ontario, which marks the first instailment of a five-year, $2-blllion commitment made by the government in the 1997 budget to support hos- pital restructurlng. Most hospitals in Ontario have begun reforming their operations, many of the m vol- untarily. This announcement of $154 million recognizes and supports the steps these hospitals have taken and reimburses theni for one-time operating costs related to restructurîng. "This Investment is wel- come news for my riding of Durhanm East" said MPP John OToole. It supports the ded- ication and hard work of health care workers and administrators at Bowmanville Memorial Hospital and North Durhanm Health Services, and wlll con- tinue to ensure that high quality patient services are available close to home." The $2-billion fund was created in the 1997 provin- cial budget to assist hospitals to cover the costs of reformn. Along wth the governmnent's rescheduling of the planned thrd year of hospital savings, the creation of the Rural Health Policy, and the rein- vestment of over $350 million to date Into hospltal-based progranis like cardiac and cancer services, it is designed to ensure hospitals continue to deliver top-quality front- line patient services during a period of transition. OPEN LETTER TO EDITOR Clarington We're In The Hayfield Now Daylily Gardens 4704 Pollard Road, R. R. 1 Orono, Ontario LOB IMO Fax 983-6271 Dear Mayor and Members of Council Re: PD- 110-97/ DEV 97-058 As owners of an agricul- tural business and tourist attraction in the Orono area we feit it time to write to express our deep concern about the Lisbmnan Proposal. We have an abundance of industrial land in this area already and we have seen too, much of the best farning land in the world used for totally inappropriate development. We are blessed to live in the richest agricultural reglon in the world where farmers have neyer heard of a crop failure. Neyer! We can think of no other region in the world where that can be said with assurance. Blood donations needed In response to the state of emergency that has been declared in the Montreal area, the Red Cross is urging local residents to donate blood at the blood donor clinic to bc held in Bowmanville this week. The ice stornis have reduced blood supply in Montreal and several other Eastern communities, wlth most hospitals cancelling elective surgerles. The Montreal area willl require outside assistance of 300 units of blood per day for at least the next week as the mai ority of their blood donor clinics will not be operational for some time. Storm damnage in some Maritime conirnuni- ties will also niake blood col- lection difficult there. "We urge individuals who have not donated in some time and those with fvlends and family in the Montreal area to come out and donate," said Toronto Centre Director Kathryn Pagonis. Donors age 17 to60 (71for regular donors) are urged to attend: REHOBOTH CHRISTIAN REFORM CHURCH, 130 Scugog Road, THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 1998, 12:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. RKecycle Mr. Lishxnan has referred to the ambiance of the pro- posed area, however the far-- ers and those living in the region also have their right to that sanie quality and indus- try would not contribute to that one iota. We also feel that if this was anyone but Mr. Lishman tis would not even be given the- tume of day. This does not however give anyone the riglit to rape the land. Future gen- erations xii severely judge those who do.. We have several friends who live West, of Toronto where it is hard to fmnd land, for agricultural purposes and who have been loolng in this region. You must not dis- courage those who would add to the farming cormmunity by- failing your first ýtest of the plan in place for this area. This land is designated PER~MANENT AGRICULTUR- AL 1RESERVE it doesn't say temporary agricultural reserve.
