4 - Orono WeeklyTmes. Wednesday. January 7, 1998 Building Place Bantam Leafs r SPOR,- Sports Ediior RoseyBateman discipline + hard work = great hockey! Markham Label Leafs on a On Monday, December 29 'The Building Place' Orono Bantam Leafs played host to Bowmanville Darlington Auto. The game was delayed due to the absence of referees. The Darlington Auto coach put on the stripes, tied the whistle around his neck and the game was on! But, instead of a league game--it became an exhibition game because of the no-show on-ice officials. Scott Wood scored the first goal unassisted for Orono at 6:43 with little fanfare. It was hard to tell a goal was scored until one looked at the score- board. Three minutes later Dan Tresise took a pass from Sean Pudlis and whacked in Orono goal number two. Darlington Auto responded by scoring 3 unanswered goals in less than three minutes. Darlington Auto scored another goal in the second peri- od. There were no penalties for either side although it was a hard-hitting period with some fine puck handling. Orono's Bob Brown made a great sliding save--some fancy belly work this game. In the third, Orono came back with a vengeance scoring two trying to keep the Autos at bay. The first of which occurred only seconds into the period. After receiving a Sean Pudlis pass, Dan Tresise sent the puck home for his second goal of the game. The Builders were able to keep the puck in Darlington Auto's end for most of the game exhibiting great team work while skating a high speed game. Rick Howe, who last week used some great foot work, tried the belly slide and not only did he intercept the puck--but passed it as well. What is this? Something new learned in prac- tice! Maybe we'll call it coach Tresise's tricky tummy tech- nique! The second goal of the third came from Dan Tresise, who once again slapped in the big one, tying up the game with only three minutes remaining with assistance from Mark Brennan. At this point the game really picked up momentum. With only seconds left on the clock the Autos made a rush, the puck hit the goal post and as the net came loose the buzzer sounded. The score remained tied at 4. What a game! It was an exciting third peri- od and a great game. Kudos to players and fans for behaving in an A-1 fashion. No outbursts Family Auto bantams holiday action The O.M.H.A. Family Auto bantams kept busy over the holidays suffering a 4-2 loss to Madoc in home exhibition play December 28th, followed by a 3-game tournament in Uxbridge the following day. The bantams defeated Uxbridge 2-0 in game one fol- lowed by a 3-1 victory over Erin in game two and a closely contested 4-2 loss to Stouffville in game three. Madoc, looking for stiffer competition than accustomed to in their own league request- ed exhibition play--naturally they were obliged, but proved a tough opponent. Family Auto took a 2-1 first period lead on a goal from Tyler Robinson assisted by Ryan Tresise and John Whitehead and a goal from Tresise with Bob Witheridge assisting. Madoc went on to score two second period goals and ended the game with an empty-netter in the third. With an early 7:30 a.m. start against tournament host Uxbridge on Monday both teams played a scoreless first period. Things clicked for Orono in the second as they potted two unanswered goals. The first by Bob Witheridge from McManus and the second by Ryan Tresise from Whitehead. Uxbridge fought bard in the third out-shooting our boys 8-1 but were unable to penetrate goaltender 'hot' Scott Poole who chalked up another shut-out. In game two facing Erin, Family Auto took a 1-0 first period lead with a goal from Ryan Leddy assisted by Bob Witheridge and Craig McManus. Both teams played a tight scoreless second period. Orono scored twice in the third before Erin found a way to put one past 'Poole'--Orono's stingy goalie. Orono marksmen were Craig McManus unassisted and Bob Witheridge from Tresise. Facing Stouffville for the tournament championship, the Orono squad treated their fans to one of the most enjoyable games of the season. Stouffville opened the scor- ing late in the first but Orono's Matt Reid replied early in the second with McManus and Adam Tollett assisting. Stouffville slid two more goals into the Orono net in the third. Despite using the opposition net minder for target practice-- pelting him with 16 shots at the end, the bantams were unable to score. Both teams played a very disciplined game resulting in only 4 penalties--a rare feat in bantam hockey these days. 8-0 over Bobcaygeon The Orono Family Auto bantams started the new year showing little mercy for their first home game opponent-- Bobcaygeon. In the first Orono went up 2-0 on goals from Matt Reid assisted by McManus and from Adam Tollett assisted by Witheridge and Robinson. Orono picked up the pace a bit in the second with four more unanswered goals from Rob Thompson, Andrew Beacock, Craig McManus and Bob Witheridge. Earning assists were Greg Bester, Andrew Beacock, Jeff Thompson, Ryan Leddy, Ryan Tresise and Adam Tollett. Orono maintained the pres- sure in the third period with two more goals giving them 8 goals on the game. Marksmen this period were Witheridge assisted by Robinson and McManus assisted by Matt Reid and Leddy. Scott Poole, seeing a lôt of work lately earned yet another shut-out while his partner Chris Burritt recovers from a knee injury. Family Auto's next home game is Friday night against Beaverton. This should prove to be a very interesting match- up as their last encounter ended in a 2-all tie! 5-game undefeated streak Peewee House Leaguers' 'C' Champs in Newcastle There are fifteen shiny tro- phies sitting on bedroom shelves in Orono this week. The Orono Peewee House League team won the 'C' title at the Newcastle Peewee tourna- ment December 30th. The Orono club put up some pretty impressive numbers not yet seen by this house league team soundly defeating Richmond Hill 7 - 2 in the final. They managed to stifle Richmond Hill's every attempt to gain momentum. J.P. Pisani went on a scoring spree, netting five of the seven goals scored as he "with a little help from his friends" calmed the ragged nerves of coach Tom Martin. Shawn DeJong played a fine game setting up Will Lofgren for a goal in the first period and Kenneth Lake's goal in the final two minutes of the game. Fans were on their feet as the Orono team left the ice! The first game ended in a 1- all tie. The lone Orono goal was scored by Kenneth Lake with assists going to Michael Knapp, DeJong and Lofgren. The Orono Peewees were shut-out in game two putting them into the 'C' division albeit some fine defensive plays. It was during game three when the club really put it all together. Jordan Beacock, Kevin Martin and Andy Robinson all eamed assists. Defensively, this was one of their best games of the season. Fabian Rosario playing for- ward, managed to help on defense by clearing the puck while Kevin Martin didn't hesi- tate to put some muscle into his game. The quick stick of Kienan Williams kept many-a- puck from getting too close to the net while Kyle MacDonald kept the game fast-paced mov- ing up and down the ice with size and speed. Josh Shephard, Michael Texeira and Kevin Pritchard dug deep also con- tributing to the team's success- ful defensive game in front of goaltender Darrell Kennedy. from over-zeailous fans, no fits of frustration from players, zero time for penalties! What a dis- play of self-discipline, hard work and desiFe. Fantastic! Orono 2, Skylight Donuts 2 In a home game encounter with Bowmanville Skylight Donuts JanuarY 3, that ended in a 2-all tie. Ashley Getz played a stellar gamp in net with Bowmanv'ille out-shooting the Leafs. The first period was score- less but fast-pàced. The second saw goaltender 'Getz' stop shot after shot how- ever, Skylight's persistence paid off as they went up by one amongst some confusion when the face-off wcs in Orono's end. Sean Pudlis tied it up 1-1 scoring an unassisted goal for the bantam Leafs. With two minutes left on the clock 'Skylight' put one in making it 2-1. Orono was outshot by Bowmanville in the final peri- od. However, Sean Pudlis' shot on goal flashed up on the score- board pulling Orono even at 2. Adam Rypstra was credited with the assist. In the final seconds Orono made a rush for the net but the score remained the same. The Markham Lable Peewee Leafs ran their undefeated streak to 5 games on Sunday when they robbed Manvers of a sure win. So Manvers thought! Orono had other ideas, opting for an extra attacker. With goal- tender Jeff Slemon on the bench, they waged a last minute, never-say-die effort to tie the game at 5. The Leafs found themselves down by three goals in the game as the Mustangs showed that they were not the same team that Orono had defeated earlier in the season. Lee Allin managed to put the Leafs on the board late in the second period on a breakaway as he deeked the Mustang goalie and put it upstairs. Curt Robinson and Aaron Robinson had the assists. Manvers took a 3-1 lead to the dressing room at intermission. The Markham Label squad came out skating hard in the third period and Curt Robinson was able to cut the Manvers' lead to one goal as he took a pass from goalie Jeff Slemon and went end-to-end out-skat- ing several Mustang players and finishing it off by burying the puck behind the Manvers goalie. The Leafs were handed a golden opportunity at the half way point of the third period when the Mustangs found themselves two players short. Lee Allin was able to finish off a nice passing play from Nathan Caruana and Kyle Searle with another of his big slapshots from the point to draw the Leafs even and then Mark McAlister put the Leafs ahead by one when he banged home a rebound just 39 seconds later. Nathan Caruana and Curt Robinson had the helpers on the go-ahead goal. The Leafs lead proved to be short-lived as the Mustangs took advantage of some sloppy play in the Leaf s zone to tie the game at 4 then retook the lead as they intercepted a pass up the middle in the Leaf end capitalizing on the Orono mis- cue with 2:55 left in the game. It looked as though the Leafs would surely lose this one when they were given a penalty with 52 seconds left in the game. But Orono managed to get the puck in Manvers end and added an extra man while Slemon headed for the bench. Aaron Robinson made a great play at the blue line to keep the puck in and Tanner Millson fed a pass to Curt Robinson who notched his second goal of the game to even the score at 5 with eigbt ticks left on the clock! The Leafs travel to Woodville on Tuesday hoping to avenge an earlier loss then take on the CRHL Peewee Selects in exhibition play at home Sundav.
