The Orono Horticultural Society has organized a gar- den tour of eight gardens of note within Orono and the immediate area. The tour runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. There is no charge for this outing. As well a Strawberry Social is on tap for this Saturday afternoon 2 to 4 p.m. It is being held in the Orono Town Hall and bemng sponsored by the board of management of the hall. The menu is the usual for a Strawberry Social. A Flute Trio will entertain during the two hour period at the Town Hall. in speaking with Shelley Etmanskie of the Horticultural Society she said they were most pleased with the selection of gardens and that there is much to see and enjoy on this outing. The eight gardens include the well-known Dave Hinton gardens, 3384 Taunton Road, Shelley Etmanskie 5865 O'Chonski Road, the gardens of Pat and Erie Bales 5867 Main Street, Orono, John Ro- manshuk's Happy Hollow Gardens, 5147 Patterson Road, the gardens of Ann Anderson,> 61 Tamblyn Road, Lorna and Gord Atkins, 40 Centre Street, Orono, Flora Sharpe Gardens. 108 Church Street, Orono, and the gar- dens of June Ripley, 3164 Taunton Road. Ail gardens will be marked with balloons and signs. So corne out on Saturday tour the village and area to enjoy the beautiful gardens and don't forget about the Strawberry Social in the Town Hall, 2 to 4 for a tasty treat and the sounds of a flute trio. Demno derby returns bigger & better The Port of Newcastle was the place to be in Claringlon to watch sorne spectacular Canada Day Fireworks. Many people headed down to the lake in the early evening and were rewarded at dusk with a great show of fireworks as they were shot over the lake. Fireworks and water are such a good combination. This event was sponsored again by the Optimist Club of Newcastle Vilage. A popular event at the Durham Central Fair, the Demolition Derby will retumn again thlis September. This yeair's (derby will be tperated by, P & R Demnolition Derby productions (705) 749-9597. A special Mini Car Event uslng all 4 cylinder cars will be added to the lineup. Other Special heats willl include the "Feature Heat" where the wlnners from the regular heats will compete for the overall wlnner place. Also a "Hard Luck" heat for the drivers of regular heats who were unable to compete for varlous reasons. A trophy willl be awarded to the "Best Painted Car" at the end of the show. Due. to the overwhelming response last year, additional grandstands will be in place for this year's event. Entry fee is $25.00 payable in cash when the formn is picked up. Drivers miust have a valid drivers license and be 21 ye ars old or 18 years with a slgned, wit- nessed release from a parent or guardian. The Demo Derby will take place at the Durham Central (Orono) Fair on Friday, September 5th at 7:30 p.m. regular fair admission allows patrons into ail events.
