Compete in Canadian academic Decathion A teani from Clarke H.S. recently competed ln the Canadian Academlc Decathlon Championships I Burlington. The Academic Decatlon Is a rigourous com- petition conslstlng of ten events including inÎdividual testing i conomics, Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Language & Literature and Science. Students also write an essay, give an impromptu and pre- pared speech, and are inter- viewed. The last event Is a team competition mhat tests the participants knowledge i a speclfic fleld. This year's theme was -The Information Revolution". Clarke garnered twelve medals from mhe champi- onshlps includlng two gold Threequarters of a century ~-~------ Mathematics contest at Clarke medals. Team members hicluded Deepak Angl, Sian Cranton, Ian Crookshank, Katilna Dejong, Jane Easton, Shauna Ellis, Andrea Etmnanskie, Oerf Evans, Katy Evans, Julie Harper, April Kaji, Ben Koslik, Iain McOustra, Aneisha Mohammed and Richard Perry. The team started prac- ticng i October and entered- two other competitions before the Nationals. Next year Clarke will travel to Edmonton to challenge the best teams out west. Every year ln February, the University of Waterloo spon- sors five Mathematlcs con- tests, one for each year of sec- ondary school. The contest papers are witten by 110,000 secondary students across Canada. Each contest paper for Grades 9, 10 and il conslsts of 25 multiple choice ques- tions ranglng from easy to very difficult. For the Pascal Contesi (Grade 9) Elke Schroeder Is the school champion followed by Chris Galley and Rosanna Yankanah. Other participants were Sara Hartmann, Nathan Laing, Valerle Louws, Jlm Maye and Aniesha Mohamnmed. For the Cayley contest (Grade 10) Joshua Hawrylak Is the school champion fol- lowed by Colin Kaji with Jay Angi and Stephen Gulabe tied for third and Brian Trotman. Ail school champions recelved a medal from the University of Waterloo. Elke and Joshua will also recelve Certificates of Distinction from the University of Waterloo in recognition of their particularly high achievement. For the Fermat Contest (Grade 11) Brandon Francey Is the school champion fol- lowed by Andrea Etmnanskle and Paul Coutts. Other participants were Jamie AMin, Adam Brittain, Lisa Chadwlck, and Julie Harper., The contest papers for Grade 12 and OAC consist of 10 questions requlrlng full solutions. The Descartes Contest (OAC) paper was written by Holly Douglas, Shauna Ellis, Oeil Evans, Apnil Kaji and Kevin MalIey. Ceni Evans, a Grade 12 student at Clarke, was achool champion for both papers. John's 3 brothers--James, Gord and Lloyd and their wives Doreen, Marjorie and Darla, John's daugbter Catherine, ber husband Mel Switzer, their daughter Anne and ber children Sarah, Katie and John, Doug and Caria Switzer and Erin, Brad and Christina Switzer, Jessica and Emma, April and Lloyd Moore and son Mattbew, Cbad Switzer, John's son Wayne Lowery and bis wife Brenda and thieir son Richard and wife Bey and boys Robent and Andrew, Wayne's daugb- ter and busband Diane and Dean Polley, stepson Robert Griffith and biis wife Pat, Brother-in-law and cousin Ed Williamson and wife Jen, sis- ter-in-law and cousin Enid and ber husband George Brewer, and of couirse John and wife Phyllis. Ail enjoyed a delicious roast beef dinner. Following the supper everyone then went to the Hall in Kendal where every, niece, grand niece, nephew and grand nepbew in thîs country attended. By family they were Carl and Karen Lowery, Kyle, Krista, Kaitlin and Kendra, Sharon Blake, Jerome, Melissa and Nicole. Karen and Waren Jacobs, Erin, Mark and Amy. Kevin and Sharon Lowery, Thomas and Colleen. Lorna and ber daughter Jenna who lîve in Arizona were absent also Randy Blake. These ail are from James and Doreen Lowery's family. I think that we could have stayed in just about any houise in town witb ail the generous offers from neighbours and friends. What an incredible demonstration of the meaning of community. Without the support and encouragement you have provided. 1 amn not sure we could have made it this far. It certainly has bolstered us and given us hope. 1 arn normally a pretty rock steady guy, flot prone to emotional demonstrations, but it is hard for me to remain composed when 1 sec selfiess acts and genuine caring and compassion to the degree we'bave experienced it. We are so heartened bv gestures such as the kids school bosting a fund-raising play day. neighbours offering food, clotbing, housebold fixings, etc.the church offering moral and physical support, the downtown merchants donations and words of encouragement from ail. 1 amn so touched by the outpouring of support tbat 1 can hardly keep niy voice from breaking when 1 speak. We certainly will always miss our pets and our old keepsakes are mostly gone, but our family is strong and with great friends and excellent neighbours, we will recover and move on. The kids have already become attacbed to some of the toys that our community kindly provided for tbem. We are ail becoming stronger. t is a difficuit. but important lesson we are ail learmng - the value of relationsbips. M4y ebjîdren are learming that it is not ail tbe "stuff' that is in a bouse that is important, but it is the people in thue bouse and in the community which are important. Relationsbips beat possessions any day. Tfo keep y-ou up-to-date. we bave rented a bouse at 5833 Main St in Orono (Russ Majors place) wbile tbe inisuraný(ce people fix up or replace our place. It won't be ready until the faîl, but we would be happy to bave any v isitors here who would like to pop in. If you do visit, don't be surprised if you sec soîne furniture from one of youir neigbbours bouses, since alrnost everything in the bouse is begged, borrowed or stolen (not really - just borrowýed). We are extremely grateful for the use of ail of it until we can find the time and cash to replace our own.
