Event #1- Bareback Bronc RidÓng You Are Invited! WATCH CAREFULLY IT ONLY LASTS 8 SECONDS To the First Annual.. The Bareback Bronc Riding event shows the ability of the contestant to move bis feet from the point of the shoulder back to bis hand hold. His knees will almost strike his chin. The Contestant only has a hand hold whÓch resembles that of a suitcase handle. The ride lasts eight seconds in which time the contestant's free hand cannot touch the animal or any part of his body. The mark out rule also must be adhered to. The con- testant's feet must be over the point of the horse's shoul- ders when the horse's front feet touch the ground out- side the chute. The bareback broncs are usually smaller tha the sad- die broncs, with a lot of quick twists, sunfishing and turnbacks in their moves. The horse and rider are judged by a two judge sys- tem. Each judge will award a score of 25 for both the rider and the animal giving a total score of 100. The pages of westerni history name no one locale birthplace of the cowboy contests, pitting man a˝ beast. It was 250 years after the Spaniards first broug] Andalusian horse to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1598 that there was record of "1contests for roping and throwing." In 1869 at Deer Trail, Colorado, rivalry between the Hashknife, Camp Stool and Mill Iron cattle oufits culniinated in a matched bronc riding, with the winner, one Emilnie Gardenshire, declared "champion bronco buster of the plains." In 1883, merchants at Pecos, Texas, brought the contest into town. The cowboys roped longhorn steers down the main street, their competition high- lighted the July Fourth celebration. A summer's wages were ofien won or lost on the outcome of such matches. A few years later, cowboy contests were being held in Prescott, Arizona, Canada, Texas, Miles City, Montana, and a score of other towns. Rodeo was making its first, firm steps into the future.
