The grade 8's dil science projects they brÔught with them to help us learn what an experiment was. Onie group learned about oul spilis and how to dlean them up. In three cups there was vegetable oul and mn three others there was dîsh soap. We tried soaking up ýthe oil with tissue, paper't$wel and sponge. The sponge cleaned up Most. We- did the same with dish soap and that time tissues picked.up Most. Another group made a boat of styrofoam and used a candie to he at a pipe and make it move. A third group learned how toprotect an egg so they could drop It -Wlthout breaking it. They learned how to keep things well wrapped and how to make a parachute. The fourth group studied gears. Tidbits f rom 'Newcastle by Betty Formosa The Newcastle Optimist Club' held their annual breakfast wlth Santa on Saturday December l6th at the Newcastle Community Hall. Everyone who was in atten- dance enjoyed the hot pan- cakes, sausages, bacon, juice, tea and coffee that was served by the club's members. After breakfast the children were lined up and took turns visiting wlth Santa. Each child recelved a candy cane and a balloon. After vsiting with Santa every- one gathered around the Christmas tree and joined in the singing of a few Christmas Carols before going home.A fun time was had by one and al, a big THANK YOU goes out to everyonc who helped in their owfl speriai way and l'or making the occasion the GREAT SUC- CESS it turned out to bc. An'tevcning ol youth skating was held ai the Newcastle arena from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday December l6th. Although the skating was free, everyone who attended was asked to bring a toy or a non- perishable food item which will be distributed to local area res- idents. The free skate was sponsored by the Newcastle Lions, Newcastle Optimist, Square Boy Pizza, and the NEwcastle IGA. There is to be another free skate at the Newcastle arena on Saturday December 23, from 8 p.m.to 10 p.m. If you plan to attend please remember to bring a new toy or food item.
