Grandview Public Sohool is "CalIing Canada"5 botties of Ev fan and Perrier. It was only a matter of Urne before we got Thirsty Dog. Laughi if you want, but 1 plan to pick up a six pack of Thirsty Dogjust as soon as it shows up in my corner store. 1 figure there's nothing like a shot of Thirsty Dog to wash down a banana slug. Grandview Canada Chorus proudly sang "Calling Canada" with 'Ferry Crawford at the Ontario Public School Boards' Association video launching event. Did you know Grandview P.S. has a song on compact disc? The Grandview Canada Chorus recorded "Calling by Arthur Black He just ate a slug. My dumb dog Rufus just woifed down a banana slug about the size of Schwarzeneggers thumb. if you don't know what a banana slug is, you're iucky. Basically, thiey look like a common, garden-variety slug that's been weaned on steroids. If the Japanese had em they'd make horror movies about them -- Rod an, the Banana Slug That Stimed Yokohama! They eall them banana slugs because Yes, Virginia that is really how big they are. 1 didn't actually see hlm do it, but there's a trail of slug slime that meanders right up to where hie's sacked out on the front porch. The trail stops right at hîs muzzle. You don't ha-ve to be Sherlock Holmnes to deduce that somewhere in the underbrush, there's slug family wondering what's keeping Daddy so late. 0f course 1 don't know why I should be surprised that Rufus has expanded his diet to mnclude slugs. This is a dog that regularly tracks, bnings down and eats crickets, houseflies, appie cores, toes o f slippers and things unmen- Canada" last year. Rick Johnson wrote the tune for Canada's 125th Birthday song competition and was inspired by the Referendum issue to approach Grandview with it as a fundraiser. The young singers performed the track with Terry for television, tionable in a famiiy oriented newspaper like the Orono Weekly limes. Could be worse, 1 suppose. Rufus couid be a Great Dane and named Dalsy. Daisy lives, with the Weykoff family in suburban Los Angeles, where she spends ail her sparetime hunting down and devouring tennis balîs. As near as the Weykoffs and their increasingly wealthy veterinarian can figure, Daisy has gobbled 36 tennis balîs s0 far. At ieast that's the number they've retrieved fromn her stomach in the 17 opera- tions she's undergone. "Daisy's been sliced miore ways than a pizza", says Mrs. Weykoff, "but she juist woni't quit eating them." The Weykoffs apparently live in a decidedly Yuppie-ish area of suburban L.A. -- there are tennis courts on every block. Wihich mieans happy hunting for Daisy the ding- bat "We've tried tying hier uip, fencing her in, watching her day and night, but nothing stops her", laments Mrs. Weykoff. 1 guess the Weykoffs can at the Referendum Rally held at Nathan Phillips Square on October 30, and at citizenship celebrations. Over $3 000 has be raised from the sale of the cd which has been receiv- ing air time on radio stations locally and across Canada. by Beth Wilcken-Shkurtoff be thankful Daisy wasn't attracted to the game of bas- ketball. And another good thing about a Tennis Bail Diet -- there can't be a lot of calories in it. Rufus on the other hand, is headed for a coro- nary if he keeps woffing down banana slugs. Those things are FAT. As is Rufus. Oh, he's not really fat, but he'd neyer be mistaken for a whippet. He'd neyer be mistaken for Aicama Zorba, either. Aicamna Zorba is the name of an Old English Mastiff that lives in London, England. He's also in the Guiness Book of World Records where he is officialiy recognized as the world's heaviest canine. How heavy? Three hun- dred and forty-three pounds. You could look it up if you don't believe mie. And they don't even have banana siugs in England. Speaking of which -- have you heard the latest taste treat for your pooch? Naw, I'm not talking about those connoisseur cans of' lamib giblets and prime sir- loin tîps. That stuff s old hat. l'mi talking about Tliirstyj Dog. It's the latest line from an upscale companiy calied The Original Pet Drink Company. What Thirsty Dog is, is a lightly carbonated bevera-ge. For your dog. Thtirsty Dog is apparently packed with vitamins and mninerais and cornes with a ..crispy beef flavour"' -- and selis for a little more than two loonies a litre.
