r ,29i95 -11 Local Seniors Make Donation To-Salvation Army The 4-T Club, a social club based at the Durham Senior's Complex on Station Street in Orono donated $240.00 plus a box of food to the Salvation Army. They did it at their monthly dinner meeting held on Thursday. David Beales of Port Hope entertained the crowd, while the dmnner was provided by Churches Chicken, located at the Harvey's on Highway 35/115.- Above, Marion Tennant, the President of the club presents Isabelle Jones, the Salvation Armny's Family Services Director with thecheque and food. Gift packs will be made up for needy people this Christmas. On Monday, November 6, Clarke High School attended an assembly hosted by their Students Council. The assembly was the offiial start to the annual Clarke penny drive. Every year ýClarke- donates the proceeds from the penny drive and various other fundraisers, to the War Amps. This year,- however, Clarke was given the chance to sece what the donated montey is used for. Art fyles and Bill Greenslade of the Toronto Branch of War Amps, came to Clarke to give us a presentation on different ways that the money helps their CHAMP program. The two gentlemen showed us various types of artificial limbs that are used along ýwith some special sport's attachments that are avail- able to the CHAMPS. The money donated will help to cover most of the cost of an artificial 11mb so that the famn- illes who need them will not have to pay the full amount. It will also help to cover the cost of those special limbs and attachments that allow the CHAMPS to participate in different types of sporting activities. The presentation was a huge success and the m otivation that it inspired was wonderful. Later that wkeek on Thursday the students of Clarke were treated to a Date Auction. All of the dates were volunteers and the money paid for t hem was donated to the penny drive. Needless to say the auction raised a great deal of money, while provid- ing some comic relief from a normal school day. At the end of the week Clarke had earned over one thousand dollars and the cheque was presented at our Remembrance Day assembly on Friday. Art Fyles and Bil Greenslade were both in attendance and they expressed their gratitude to the entire school. The staff and students at Clarke High School raised a great deal of money for a worthy cause and the Students Councîl would like to thank them for their effort. A special thanks to the staff and students who vol- unteered to-count-the pen- nies, mun and participated in the auction and who arranged and spoke at the two assem- blies.1 It is truly a great expe- rience to see the younger gen- erations learning from the past while remembering and thanking those heroes who gave us the freedom that we enjoy in the present. It is even more rewarding to see those same heroes from the past helping today's genera- tion of heroes in the CHAMP program. Lindsey Couch Stephen' 80 King St. W. Bowmanville Everybody 1 talk to lately, has a cold, sore throat, flu, viral infection, or'is certain that they have one foot in grave. Well 1 can assure you that I have been feeling worse than that! I was certain the gravediggers were a split sec- ond from shovelling the dirt « over me. (Don't we always love to over-dramatize for a littie sympathy?!) Since the end of September I have had a sinus infection, gland infection. allergic reac- tion to medication, and have suffered a honrible seemingly endless cough. The great part about being 111 for what seems like forever - and yes, there is a positive side to having a lin- gering cold or flu - is the state of relief and happiness we experience when our normal- ly healthy feeling retumns. We are relîeved that we don't have some dreaded-dis- ease we had been sure we had after looking up various ilînesses in a medical book. We are happy that we can once again function without pain, fever, chilîs, hacklng and coughing and a continu- al tiredness. Last night I spoke with My aunt in Kingston. My uncle has been very iii for several months now. A few weeks ago a biopsy was done on an area in the throat. The results are back. Uncle Harold has lym- phoma - cancer of the lyrnph glands. When my aunt told me the news 1 couldn't believe It. I had thought lymiphomna was a childhood disease because my sisterl's little boy 'Jody' died from this disease at the age of three. SAunt Shirley said the doc- tor told them lymphoma was basically a senior citizen's dis- ease. I didn*t know what to say. My aunt and uncle have been wonderful to me since mom passed away in 1983. We talk on the phone often. I drop in for short visits every now and then. In September aunt Shirley, who neyer wears make-up, held a Mary Kay skin care class for me in her home just because she wanted to help me during a training course, Just because she's a wonderful person. During our conversation aunt Shirley stili took time to express her concemns about my heaith. I felt so humble. If all 1 ever do is cough and choke, or have sore throats or a flu bug ll know I'm one of the lucky ones. Going into the Christmas season 'd like to remind you to not get run down or overdo it. Look afrer your health. And also remember 'drinking and driving don't mix! You are playing a game of chance with your health and the life of others.
