Diane Howart, president of Uic Ladies' Auxiliary and Jim Conneil, president of Uic Legion, (right), presented a cheque in Uic ainount of $ 10,250 on behaîf of Uic Ontario Provincial Command Branches and the Ladies' Auxilaries Charitable Foundation. The cheque was received by Doug Park, chairperson of the Memorial Hospital Foundation. The donation will help -pay for a videoô gastroscope for the operating room at Memorial Hospital. The hospital lias seen a substantiel risc in procedures requiring Uic equipment since thc arrivai a year ago of another surgeon, Dr. Paul Hardy. A video gastroscope is used by doctors to exaine for ulcers, cancers or causes of bleeding in the esophagus, stomach or duodenum (Uihe first part of the small intestine imimediately below the stomach) The instrument is inserted through Uic mouth. A tiny cunera attached to Uic gastroscope magnifies images at thc area bemng exainmed up onto a screen so Uic doctor can see what the condition of the area is. Using a gastroscope allows for early detection and diagnosis of problems, resulting in decreased numbers of patients requiring gastric surgery. This, translates- into reduced stress for patients and reduced costs to the health care system. The cquipment is valued at $24,000.00. Council debates Port Granby utr defers decis ion for the present time Clarington council on Monday evening at a meeting in Tyrone again tabled a report conccrning Uic degree of cleanup at the Port Granby Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposai Faciity. Some months ago in a presentation to council John Veidhuis, then chairman of the Port Granby committee, sug- gested that council consider a suggestion from thc Siting Task Force thet the Ciarington Community Liaison Group look carefully at the possibility of removing oniy the prîmary and secondary waste at Port Granby leaving behind only marginally contaminated soils. Mr. Veidhuis said the Community Liaison Group was looking for direction in this metter from coundil. The request wes turned over to Dennis Hefferon who has been dealing with the Siting-Task Force for a number of years. Mr. Hefferon recommended that Uie municipality advise the Community Liaison Group that council continues to be of the view Uiat ail contaminants at Uic Port Granby facility, must be removed from Uic Municipality. At a previous meeting of council Uic recommendation was set aside until such time as members of council could meet with the Community Liaison Group. Council members met wiUi the Community Liaison Group Monday morning. Council on Monday night furUier deferred a decision on the issue as to the degree of a cleanup at the Port Granby Weste faciity. Polonsky asked for a motion of support and a letter of support to bc sent to Uic Ontario Minister of Education. He also asked that coundil members and thc general public "talk it up for an University Centre in Oshawa as the decis ion is expected to be made in the next couple of monUis". Polonsky spoke of Uic group of citizens who have formed a team seeking the University Centre to be associated with Durham College. He said this group have been active over Uic past couple of years and that Uic project is being supported by Trent, St. Catherines, York, Ryerson and- Waterloo universities who would provide courses at Uic Oshawa University Centre.
